Manly NRL player Manese Fainu will spend the night behind bars after being charged with stabbing a man outside a church in Sydney's south-west last week.

Police allege the 21-year-old Sea Eagles hooker was involved in an altercation, produced a knife and stabbed another man at the church on Conroy Road at Wattle Grove last Friday night.

Emergency services were called to the church about 11.30pm after reports of a brawl.

The group dispersed by the time police arrived.

They found a 24-year-old man at the scene who was treated for stab wounds and taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Fainu was arrested at Liverpool Police Station this morning and charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, affray, and recklessly causing grievous bodily harm in company.

In rejecting his bail application, Liverpool Local Court magistrate Joanne Leigh accepted police concerns that Fainu was suspected to be a member of a Pacific Islander criminal group.

Police allege the 24-year-old's lung was punctured in the attack.

Both the club, and NRL Integrity Unit have been made aware of the police investigation.

In a statement, the Sea Eagles said "the club is monitoring the situation pending further investigation".

The NRL is yet to comment on the matter.

Fainu's post-season shoulder surgery had ruled him out of representing Tonga following a breakout year for the Sea Eagles.

He is rated one of the game's most promising young hookers, with his rise as Manly's first-choice rake seeing the club release Api Koroisau to Penrith ahead of the 2020 season.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said Fainu's playing future would be put under the microscope.

"I can tell you that players are acutely aware of their responsibilities and if players between now and the start of next season get themselves into trouble there will be significant consequences ... I have made that very clear and we will continue to do that," he said.

Fainu will remain in custody until the matter returns to court in December.

Wow. If it can be shown that Manly had any awareness of this than they deserve to be deprived of their player and potentially shouldn't get cap relief either. The NRL are going around to all the clubs screaming "NO OFF SEASON INCIDENTS", and they've got a guy with criminal links on their books...

This is the same guy who was involved in this delightful dabble with the law.. no conviction recorded a section 10.

Junior Kiwis rugby league player Manase Fainu has escaped conviction after pleading guilty to filming a sex act without consent.

The matter was heard in Fairfield Local Court in Sydney on Tuesday, with Magistrate Richard Funston opting to hand Fainu a good behaviour bond. The magistrate took into consideration the fact that Fainu had no criminal record, was suffering from adjustment and anxiety disorders and had immediately deleted the recording.

Fainu is considered one of the game's most promising youngsters. The 19-year-old, who played for the Junior Kiwis last year, made nine appearances for the Manly Sea Eagles this season after coming in as a replacement for injured rake Apisai Koroisau. The incident occurred on April 5, but Fainu was allowed to play in the NRL while the matter was before the courts.

According to the police fact sheet, Fainu and the woman knew each other for three weeks and had met just once prior to the incident after communicating through Facebook and Snapchat.

The pair had consensual sex at the women's address at Guildford West when Fainu picked up his phone and started filming the act on Instagram. Once the woman realised she was being filmed, Fainu showed her the video. She asked for the video to be deleted, which he did in front of her.

Two days later, the woman filed a complaint to Granville police and Fainu was charged. The statement described him as being "polite, co-operative and remorseful" and that the victim held no fears for her safety.

The particulars of the case have been forwarded to the NRL's integrity unit.

Fainu's high-profile lawyer Elias Tabchouri said the decision to grant Fainu a section 10 (to not record a conviction) was appropriate.

"This is the appropriate outcome," Tabchouri said. "This is a symptom of the society we live in today with social media.

"With easy access to phones that have cameras, men who are by any definition young can find themselves in environments that are significantly compromised on many levels.

"He has sought help, that continues to be ongoing, and we have rallied around him. He has great family support, great support from his management and from the club."

In June, Fainu told Fairfax Media he was considering taking time out from football to embark on a Mormon mission.

"It's always in my mind to do that, I've always considered serving a mission for my church," Fainu said at the time.

"My family has strong faith, we're Mormons. We celebrate it and I've always considered it, whether it's now or in a few years."

The NRL is investigating another scandal involving South Sydney players. The woman at the centre of the incident is refusing to speak to investigators, with the incident overshadowing Saturday's preliminary final against the Roosters.

If the dude has a punctured lung he wasn't trying to scratch/slash him, he was going for the kill.

Most Islander have links to gangs through family. Our definition of family is a lot broader though. Fainu has cousins who are heavy in that life. He may just not be providing information to the police so has been charged. Its a waste of talent and opportunity. The only good thing is the pressure this puts on Des after he let go of Api and now they have no hooker!

Are we ever going to have an off-season without controversy? We're not even 1 month in and there have already been 2 incidents.
