Valentine Holmes to quit NFL and sign with Cowboys in $1m per season NRL return

Val Holmes has given up his dream of playing in the NFL and will suit up back in rugby league for the Cowboys in 2020.

Reports emerged in News Corp papers overnight that Holmes is poised to meet with Cowboys coach Paul Green in New York tonight.

But Wide World of Sports has learned that Holmes has already agreed in principle to join the Cowboys on a contract worth around $1 million.

Holmes rocked rugby league when he decided to quit Cronulla last year to try his hand in the NFL.

He was picked up by the New York Jets and played several trial matches but failed to make the 55-man roster.


He took on a job on the Jets' training squad, on a salary of less than $200,000 a year.

It is also written in his contract that he cannot play in the NFL this season and the frustration of sitting and just watching the action every weekend is believed to have been the straw that broke the camel's back and made up Holmes' mind to return to the NRL.

Holmes hails from North Queensland but moved to the Sharks as a 17 year-old - and the club has been trying to get him back ever since.

Holmes has always been a much better winger then fullback and spent a year out of the game. Now he goes back to Townsville to get into a massive comfort zone of his home town. I’m glad we aren’t forking out a million for him.

Massive buy for the Cowboys. Would of been an alternative to Latrell for us (need to buy a top player that can goal kick IMO). Since he'd rather play at the Cowboys tho it would of costed us 1.2-1.3m (similar if we wanted Tom Trbojevic). THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE HAVE TO SIGN THEM/WENT FOR THEM, JUST IF.

Pretty sure they kept 1m aside for Holmes as this was always very possible. They also signed Marsters, war chest! Their packs been ageing for a while and they've had some players retire too.

It was Hayne 2.0 from the start. It's not an easy game to learn to play, especially at an elite level. Just look at how many College players can't make the NFL and they grew up playing the game.

I can honestly say I don't think there is any current nrlol player that can even keep a 2nd string role in the NFL.

Just the jump from the most unprofessional league to the most professional league would fuck their minds.

Let alone the fitness, the plays, the brains, etc.

As I and others said months ago, he was always coming back otherwise he'd be wasting his career and losing millions as a training squad NFL player.

How are North Qld signing Robson, Masters, Drinkwater and now Holmes in the space of a few months and we end up with DWZ (good), Stimson (solid), Britt and Katoa? (bench players/backups)

And people want to act as if we don't have anything to worry about when it comes to recruitment..
