Nah. They're protesting government corruption and taxes. The government has started raising taxes on transport and communications so bus fares cost 4 times as much and they're introducing taxes on whatsapp and other communication apps. Basically making it so the poor can't afford to do anything.
Yes true, but the latest taxes on transport and communications is the "straw that broke the camel's back"...enough is enough type of thing.
There are a long list of things annoying the people of the country going back 30 years from when the civil war ended in 1990.
Back in in 1975 when the civil war broke out it was "Masked" as a religious war between Muslims and Christians, when really it was a war based on class and status(the rich vs poor).
The Maronite Christians held majority government based on population numbers and were considered a right wing "western type" government with close ties to the USA. Many right wing MP's & their many followers were among the wealthy, educated and lived a luxurious lifestyle. Then there was the left wing arab Muslims(not all but many) who were poor and lived in the slums along with the 200,000 Palestinians refugees living in refugee camps. The poor wanted a fair go, they wanted jobs and wanted to be treated equal but felt they were being oppressed by the right wing...this is what ultimately led to the civil war.
I fear that this protest has a similar taste to it with the current government looking after the their own pockets and squeezing the life out of the Lebanese people, the difference being the protesters/the people/the oppressed do not have any political leader representing them and are not sectarian based and are protesting as one no matter what religion or race they are, whether they come from the North or the South, they are joined and united as brothers and sisters of Lebanon.
