Why not.. he has the determination and you can see he strives for success, when the club gave him a go,he was prepared to put in. Prove his worth an give back, he is a top bloke an has been a HUGE positive to the doggies..!!!

I know I will get blasted for this. But I just don’t see what everyone else sees. No doubt a quality player and might be the best in the squad.

his hands aren’t great though. And he can drop a bomb or two. The guy is more suited on the wing or at centre.

Champion bloke. And all respect to him for choosing us. And I do hope he stays here long term. And like others have mentioned he plays hard and runs the ball have hard. But I’d still be open for a fullback (even latrell or someone) and that way DWZ can move to centre or wing (where he played most of his football at the panthers). I’d even take tuivasa if he cans available for the 1.

Great idea if we want to stay outside of the top 8.

You build your team around players that can single handedly win a game out of nothing. DWZ can be a piece of a great team, but only if he is say the 4th best player in the team.

He runs the way a real footy player should run
Enough said

I'm with you. He does some things very well at fullback like organising the defence and attacking the ball, but he's far from a certain thing and the superstar at fullback that some on here are trying to make out.

He needs too improve a few key areas if he has a long-term future at the back for us and with this coming season he has the opportunity to do so. If not then I hope the club is open to a more elusive more skilled option at the back because that's just what you need these days, us more so with the rest of our spine already being severely limited in terms of skill and experience.

I wasn't overly fussed when we signed him but he is playing better footy with us so far.. besides his kick returns, he is a good talker and a good organiser.. it's no surprise that our defence worked much better as a unit upon his arrival.... Don't know if we need to build a team around him, but he definitely needs to be locked down long term

I like him and his attitude. He needs to be re-signed, whether he plays fullback, centre or wing is another question. He's definitely not a marquee or someone to build around but he is a leader and the change in our fortunes was when he joined us.

The problem is we haven't had a real fullback since Patten. I won't include Barba because of various reasons like him being manufactured into one and his pretty short stint there with us. When you've gone that long without a specialist any glimmer of hope will get people excited.

Love the guy but not the type of player to build around.
Look at Cronk, Lockyer, Sterling, Mortimer etc. We need a long term half to build around. That’s the recipe for success.
You look at Storm, they thought Smith would be enough but no lollies. You MIGHT get one premiership, but long term success is built around a half.

his best asset is his kick returns... you can get that from the wing. we need a better fullback if we are to ever win another comp.

Yeah, I'd extend him for a year as quality utility back, but I hope his future is on the wing. As you said, we still get the kick returns and strong dummy half runs but, even next year, Hoppa is far more creative and Meaney with his speed could be better running off Renouf and RFM through the middle (if he could just learn how to do that 'Fullback 101' manoeuvre).

Still, I'm sure DWZ will play FB in 2020 and Meaney will continue to train and play as a winger.

Very good player that brings a positive attitude to the team but he's not the player you build the club around. They'll be a time when we will get sick of him not being able to come up with try assists due to his lack of ball playing ability and he'll most likely get moved to the wing when a better all round fullback becomes available..

100% - a great player but not a match winner...

He wouldn't even crack roosters starting team

The shining light in a year with the lights largely turned off!
Hope his future is with us, question is where suits him best.
Perhaps some one on one coaching in the off-season will help with the mentioned issues?

100% agree there's a reason why he captained NZ and at such a young age, and it's no coincidence that players started running on the ball harder after he's signing

except for the fact that we weren't winning shit before he came along! Not everything is about the miracle play, his runs from the back have us on the front foot immediately and his organising of our defensive line saw the amount of points we were conceding decrease dramatically.
