US police say they will "stop at nothing" to identify those who shot and killed Australian man Brenton Estorffe during a home invasion in Texas.

The 29-year-old Brenton Estorffe was shot dead in his home in the city of Katy, near Houston, in the early hours of Wednesday (local time), police said.

His wife and two young children were in the house sleeping at the time of the shooting.

Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said Mr Estorffe was woken by two intruders as they broke into the home.

"He woke up and confronted two individuals in his living room, at which point in time he was shot and killed," Sheriff Nehls said.

It was believed the shooting occurred during a burglary attempt, however, Mr Nehls said he did not have a clear idea of why the pair broke into the house.

"Most individuals what want to commit a burglary do it when people are not at home, when they are working," he said.

"These individuals pulled in there around midnight, broke glass into the back of the house and then, you know — I don't think they were there to commit a burglary.

"There were cars parked in the driveway.

His younger brother Cobin Estorffe wrote on Facebook that life would "never, ever be the same" without Brenton.

"Hands down you are my hero the way you stood up for your family," he wrote.

"Can only dream to be a little bit like you.

"Best mate, oldest brother, a son, a father, an uncle, a husband and a f***ing hero."

Steve Turner wrote on Facebook that it was a senseless act "leaving nothing but pain and memories of a really great guy, wonderful son brother husband father and friend to so many".

Brenton Estorffe went to Mountain Creek State High School on Queensland's Sunshine Coast but later transferred to a high school in the US state of Virginia.

He later attended Southern Virginia University.

Neighbourhood 'on edge'

Police spokeswoman Jessica Reyes earlier said officers were investigating a car that reportedly sped away from the scene, but did not have a suspect.

"The Fort Bend County Sheriff will stop at nothing to identify these individuals, apprehend them and bring them to justice," Mr Nehls said.

"We have a team of detectives scouring the neighbourhood, looking at surveillance videos, talking to individuals."

He said the fatal shooting "startled" residents in the area.

"We are a very large county that has very little violent crime," Mr Nehls said.

"You talk to neighbours and some of them leave their doors even unlocked.

"There are people in this neighbourhood that are on edge right now with what took place the other night."

Thats because Aussies are too nice and trusting.

Unfortunately not all of the world is kind hearted and genuine like a majority of Australians.

They mistake it for weakness and think they can exploit us?

A friend of mine got back from Vegas.
A trustworthy African American man got hold of his wallet and identification over there.

I got to remind myself they don't call Americans septic tanks for no reason.

Apparently yanks take exception to being called septics. I mentioned it once to this American guy who worked with us and he told me that himself... they can let a lot of things fly, but that's one term they'll react to.

A friend of mine many years ago that I played on the same basketball team with got a scholarship to play basketball at an American University.

Anyhow, he had been living their a couple of years and found himself a girlfriend. They had recently just got engaged at the time. They had just been out for dinner and went to the movies that night and were walking home when a drunk driver came across the road and onto the footpath. My friend pushed his girlfriend out of the way just before the car hit and killed him instantly. Poor blokes life was cut short before even really beginning.

I know it wasn't a murder, but he was still killed in America hence why I was reminded of this story.

100% we are way too trusting. Did he have a gun by the way? Not suggesting it would have saved his life just curious. Absolute cowards to break in at night. Prob not just a burglary

They have balls (actually lack of brains) to break into a Texan home tbh.

Hope they get the fucking pieces of pig shit.

Problem with living over there you need to adopt the America’s attitude
Buy a gun, someone breaks in, shoot first ask questions later

It shows people’s true colours. Unlike here they pretty much have so much freedom. With freedom comes a price. That price is you can’t force people to be good *****. If we want that we should establish a communist/socialist regime that msm is trying to push for in the west anyway. Problem with that, when you actually oppress people you’ll get revolutions. America has too much freedom making little white boys and girls bored and then come up with scenarios in their brains making them victims of the way the wind blows.
