The pests are at it again!

There were 38 arrests in Sydney, with charges including failing to comply with direction, while in Melbourne 10 people were arrested for failing to obey move on orders and seven protesters were arrested in Brisbane.

The rallies, organised by the Extinction Rebellion movement, are calling for more government action on climate change.

Hundreds took part in the Sydney demonstration which began at Belmore Park near Central on Monday afternoon.

Several elderly protesters were led away, including a man in a suit, whose removal prompted two men to lie down on Broadway in protest against the police intervention, before they too were removed.

One woman was placed in handcuffs and had her arms pulled over her head by officers as she was led away.

An elderly woman screamed, "You're hurting me, please stop this," as police dragged her across the concrete on her knees, when she refused to leave the road.

Protesters chanted, "This is what democracy looks like" and called those being led away "heroes".

Police on horseback watched on as officers removed five teenage girls from the road, ending the sit-in protest.

The rally then moved to Central Park where protesters held hands, chanted and sang songs.

Four protesters chained themselves inside a makeshift water tank before police and a tow truck removed the tank and cut the protesters free.

New South Wales Police said 30 people were arrested following the rally, for offences ranging from obstructing traffic to disobeying reasonable direction.

Assistant Commissioner Mick Willing said officers' priority was to ensure public safety.

"While police respect the right of individuals and groups to protest, we have a responsibility to the community and local businesses to ensure they can go about their normal activities without being impacted on or put at risk," he said.

"We are aware that this particular group of protesters intend to cause significant disruption to the community, and any future activity of this nature will not be tolerated by NSW Police."

Several hundred protesters marched through central Brisbane amid heavy police presence.

Some activists blocked Victoria Bridge by locking on to a timber structure in the centre of the road.

A Queensland Police spokesman said seven people were charged, including for allegedly contravening police directions, walking onto a roadway when not authorised, obstructing police and public nuisance.

In Melbourne, protesters blocked the entire intersection at Flinders Street causing peak hour traffic disruptions.

Activists also gathered at the Carlton Gardens, in the city's north and marched into the CBD where hundreds staged a sit-in in the busy intersection of Russell and Bourke streets.

Some carried a glass coffin, like a fish tank, filled with aquatic plants and rocks to illustrate their concern about the impact of climate change on oceans.

Protesters were briefed before setting off and were given a legal support number in case they were arrested during the protests.

Earlier, at the Victorian Parliament a handful of people sat on the steps a meditated for climate change.

Victoria Police said 10 protesters were arrested. Eight were issued with a penalty notice for obstructing a highway and two were charged with intentionally obstructing an emergency worker.

Nah, they should be given an increase in welfare so they can afford to pay their electricity bill and keep their phones charged.

Seriously, I never get people's problem with climate change protesters.....at least they are getting triggered over a problem that is bigger than getting held up on your way to work in the morning :P

Should be made legal to run the C***s over, or bash the protesters day, I guarantee if it was legal the protesters would never protest again.

Just like this fkn goose hanging off the bridge in Brisbane. Waste Emergency services time that could be utilised somewhere else. Should be charged and sent to the fkn nearest lock up for a while.

No issues with peaceful protesting but this sh*t is getting out of hand. Send em over to Hong Kong see how relevant they are.

Why send them to Hong Kong when we can create our own authoritarian state right here? #reachforthestars

Because we are too soft. We will give them a slap on the wrists and will be wasting our time again tomorrow. Get hard with the ones doing the wrong thing.

Many were arrested, some - according to this report, were manhandled.....how are we going "soft" on them? What would you suggest we do instead? Lock them in a dungeon and leave them to rot? Give police power to shoot them on sight? What they are doing may be inconvenient for people trying to get to work, but desperate times call for desperate measures.....if we don't make major efforts to influence policy makers to do something meaningful to address climate change on a global scale, we'll soon be up shit creek without a paddle. The science is solid on this. These protesters may be a pain in people's arses, but they are a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.

They are soft, the ones getting "manhandled" are pests and deserve what they get.
Peaceful protests are fine as I said. If they are organised and kept inline go for it. Something needs to be done I agree but needs to be done right.
Some protesters get paid for protesting and some don't even know what they are bloody protesting for.
No need to go overboard and make them look like victims.
Haven't seen to many out in the country where the farmers are struggling, maybe the environment is too harsh for them out there to set up camp for a cause.

You'd be silly to believe that most of the people there are not in it for the attention... they all go back to their day to day lives afterwards and wait for the next viral issue to get up in arms about.. I know plenty of these types and what I have noticed is that they do 0 research, nor do they genuinely try to make a positive impact, rather they just share a few Facebook posts to fuel their egos.. quiz any of them and see how truly invested they are

I just find it funny and sad that these pests believe that the powers that be will change their agendas because some useless eaters are having a sook.

The first thing I notice about these events is that they all have their new iPhones out lol I honestly don't think any of them have the attention span to even read a full article on the subject... but that dopamine rush they feel when they upload all their photos of the event to Instagram and Facebook... it's like crack to these pests

You didn't answer my question....if police are arresting those deemed to be acting unlawfully,.....and roughly in some cases, how much harder should they go on them? I don't get where this whole "we are soft" mentality comes from. Nothing IS being done and it's almost too late. That's the bloody point....lol. Why would they protest in the country? If their aim is to generate media coverage, influence politicians and draw attention to the problem, the city is the place to do it.

Actually they are the problem it's self we all are we wanted a world of convenience this is the price we pay .
How do you know that? Can you speak for everyone who was there? Smartphones and gadgets aren't the real problem, anyway, The problem isn't electricity and electronic devices, it is our chosen source of power and the industrial leaders who pollute on a large scale. We can do little things to reduce our footprints (and plenty of people do), but it is politicians and industry leaders who have the real power....putting that back on the protesters is a cop out.
