I will never forget a match against Newtown at Belmore. The scrum packed down and Kevin Ryan’s head was seen to suddenly fly up above the pack. Obviously a Newtown second rower had thrown a punch to his head. Nothing immediately happened. Kevin did not react and the game continued. But following that scrum Kevin just shadowed the Bluebags offender until the player was passed the ball. At which point Kevin Ryan hit him with force. They carried the guy off on a stretcher.

Best name of a front rower - hardly played any first grade - was Mick Basham

I wonder what the players we are talking about would say about our current pack?

Does anyone remember the time Peter Kelly got sent off very early in an Anzac Day match back in the mid eighties? So early, it was said he beat the bugler off. Hard as nails. Never took a backward step. With a few other tough forwards was the basis of our Grand final wins in 84 and 85.
Geoff Robinson, late 70s early 80s, wasn't all that big but he had a huge heart and every run was 110%. Crowd favourite. He take off for a run and the crowd would yell 'Robbo'. Prop or second row. Cant remember him playing lock but could have at some stage. One other not mentioned yet - John Coveney. Played a lot with Robinson including 1980 Premiership year. Kelly and Coveney both played for NSW at different times.
First or second tackle of the game, never got to sit down.

I watched him, but it was at the end of his career at the Berries.
Once Bob McCarthy (when at Souths) took the ball ran at Big Kev, Kev stood his ground, flexed his chest and Bob fell 2 metres backward.
A big man in stature and mind. He led to the change of the whole Canterbury setup.
Soon to become the Bulldogs.

Kevin Ryan's partner at the time was a pommie called Merv Hicks, aka the white whale, he was the best prop in the game at the time.
Huge guy, had a side step and offload as good as Artie Beetson if not better.
Should have been on the list like Darren Britt.

There was a myth too that he ate raw meat with Vegemite before every match. Of course as a kid I believe it
I worked with a guy who was in the members that day when he got sent off and he said Kelly’s face was grey when he walked off

Funny thing.
Played golf at Bonville International in Coffs Harbour in 2004 (I am a member).
We hosted the Dogs and had an Ambrose comp.
Played with Braith Anasta and Hutch.
We won the day (A jersey signed by all the 2004 players) PRICELESS.
Braith was like a pro, Hutch hardly got the club to ball and said two words every shot, (Aw Fuck).

Peter Kelly. The most feared player in the most ferocious era. Close second to Tunks

Merv Hicks was a really good prop, a good ball player and unstoppable 10 metres out from the line. Wish we had him and Ryan running around today. That would unleash the madness.

Bob McCarthy had highest try scoring ratio but overall I would love a pairing of Tunks & Shrek at the moment.
