My theory on the Storm

Everyone keeps on raving about the Storm and how they are the bench mark of the NRL for the last 10 years.
How great Bellamy etc all are.

Lets look at some facts.

In the last 10 years, they have only won 2 GF's with one of those against Thurstonless Cowboys team.

Are they that great?

What the storm are is just consistency. If you were to give the Storm a mark for there regular season performances, they would have say 8 out of 10. The difference between there best and worst is not big.

They are just consistent at being at a certain level. Most other teams there difference between there best and worst performances is greater. They are not as consistent as the Storm.

When it gets to the finals, things change. Teams motivation goes up and the gap between them and the Storm closes.

Storm do not have much room to improve in the semis because there performances are at a higer level during the regular season and they can maintain it. Other teams lift and have more room to improve.

Basically the Storms best and other teams best is not really any different. This is why they have only won 2 GFs in the last 10 years.

They get a massive head start with the TPAs some of their players have negotiated.
However I think the NRL corruptly gives them a hand up in other ways, but I have no evidence, it’s just a feeling. The NRL cannot afford its Melbourne team to be below average and out of the finals as interest in Melbourne will fall off a cliff with a losing team.

But they have been able to accumulate two Premierships in that 10 year period, that's two more than us. Sure we made a couple of Grand Finals in that time but we came away empty handed. Always the Brides Maid never the bride. Unfortunately history doesn't care for those that finished second best.

Which other team has won 2 in the past 10 years? None. And how far ahead of every other team on the ladder are they this year?
I get what your saying, but the storm are better. They are more consistent because they are better. Their reserve graders/up and comers are better.
Take last weekend as an example. They rested a stack of players and still put 40 points on the titans.

None of us would be saying this if we won in 2012 or 2014.

Come Grand Final day where it's usually a top 4 team vs another top 4 team anything can happen. It really depends on your luck, referee on the day as well as which team wants it more.

The Storm may not be substantially better than any of the other top 4 come finals but the reason they make their runs into the finals a lot easier is simply because they're in the pole position to do it. Finishing within the top 2 means teams have to travel to Melbourne to play them, finishing in the top 4 allows them a slip up. We would kill to be as successful as them

Between 1999 and 2018 they have won 5 GFs granted with asterixs.. in the same time we have won one..

Whatever the reason and excuses ppl give for the storms success they have the best coach in the game and they win alot more games than they lose.. sport is about winning and thats somthing the Storm do... somthing weve forgotten how to do..

I mean we were fairly consistent in the period 2001-2006 (ignore 2005 for the moment) and we won 1 grand final.

Their biggest advantage is Cam Smith. Slot him into our side between 2012 and 2017 and we pick up two comps.
