Im going to flog a horse until its dead but Apisai Korisau and Addin-Fonua Blake need to be added to the list of realistic targets. They are too logical not to be at the top of the hit list. And Turbos back up fullback Brendan Elliot is handy too. Tidy under the highball and looking for a first grade spot. Miles better than what we have at the moment. Not a keystone player but one that can hold out till we get a star.
Addin-Fonua Blake is contracted to Manly until the end of 2022.
Apisai Korisau is contracted to Manly until the end of 2021.
Brendan Elliot is contracted to Manly until the end of 2020.

Hence chasing Trbojevic's, hard, pushing up their cost so that Manly have to let some players go.

Wighton the 5/8 that has no kicking game whatsoever. Watching a few on the Raiders games he has played 5/8, surprise he wasnt hooked a few times. He's a Centre and thats it. 750k no thanks. He was great in Defense last night thats where it ends for mine.
I don't mind him at 5/8, the issue is that he's incredibly inconsistent throughout a match.

Funny how sticky moved him to 5/8 for his kicking game.

I'm personally not a fan of him anywhere in the 17 nor will I ever be

I would whack him right in the centres, good 6 with an elite 7... his deficiencies in the halves are kinda covered up due to Hodgson being so good at controlling the game

While Korisau is contracted to 2021, Manly wont stand in his way if he can find a club to take over his contract. Manly are more than happy with Fainu and see him as long term hooker.

If he came at a decent price for a Centre I’d take him, but with the price tag he is way down the list for targets for mine.

I'd rather Fainu...but wouldn't say no to Api if he became available.

I just thought I would post an update of my rebuilding plan with off contract players available, as it has been reported that some of those considered as potential signings have since signed elsewhere or re-signed with their existing club.

I know a lot of you guys have suggested you would prefer to have players such as Brandon Smith & others, BUT we simply can’t have them as they are contracted beyond 2021 – I cant wait that long to end this misery.

PUT SIMPLY - WE NEED TO REBUILD................... (yeah, no shit right).

I would replace all 6 off contract players for 2020. There is also a rumour that we got a spare 600k.

I looked at all off contract players for the next 2 years according to "Zero Tackle" and tried to create a plan for our squad to improve without knowing their exact salaries.

We can’t buy every superstar under the cap & I have only nominated off contract players or those free to negotiate. I would have liked someone such as Kyle Flanagan but he can’t move until 2022.

I think we are too small & ineffective in our middle forwards, not creative from dummy half, weak in the centres & lack that strike back you need to be the difference in the halves or at fullback.

My nominated new players are based on Age, Size, Potential (IMO) & within the budget. I avoided players over the age of 27 to build a long-term squad & have given all available options that I thought are worth consideration (IMO). You will all have & be entitled to yours.

OUR OFF-CONTRACT PLAYERS & THEIR REPLACEMENTS For 2020 (NB: Age is 2020 season start)

1. Michael Liccha - Replaced By - Jake Turpin 23yrs 5ft10 82kg “2020 KEY Signing”. Other options - Reece Robson 20yrs, Jacob Liddle 22 yrs, (Jayden Brailey 23yrs - reportedly signed with Knights).

2. Rhyse Martin – (gone) Replaced By - Joe Stimpson 6ft2, 104kg.

3. John Olive - Replaced By - Jed Cartwright 22yrs 6ft4, 104kg. Other options - 88kg. OR promote a junior. (Jesse Arthars 21yrs - reportedly signed with Broncos).

4. Fa'amanu Brown - Replaced By - Connor Tracey 22yrs 6ft, 87kg. Other options - Cade Cust 21 yrs 5ft11, 87kg. Jai Field - 22yrs, 5ft11, 85kg. OR promote a junior.

5. Danny Fualalo - Replaced By - Christian Welch 25yrs Prop 6ft5, 110kg "2020 KEY Signing" (1yr option at Storm) he is even taking the salary of 2 current players (IMO) & promote a junior.

6. Francis Tualau (gone) - Promote a junior.

If Welch decides to take up his 1-year Storm option for 2020 then I would chase him for 2021.

2. Remis Smith

3. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak

My Maybe Keep Off Contract Players are – Josh Jackson (will be 30yrs old & on around 700k ish, can no longer handle the edge – so maybe not), Jack Cogger (IMO he will make a great utility/9 – reminds me of Polla-Mounter), Lachlan Lewis, Jeremy Marshall-King, Jarred Anderson (I don’t know him).

Conclusion

After winning the spoon in 2008, in 2009 we made 5 major Key Signings which immediately turned us around. David Stagg, Ben Hannant, Michael Ennis, Brett Kimmorley & Josh Morris. With 24 players off contract in the next 2 seasons, I believe we have the ability to be even more pro-active in buying. I have nominated 2 major “KEY Signings” for 2020 & 5 major “KEY Signings for 2021.

Rather than pour 1 million bucks into each of a few players I’ve gone for a more balanced squad. At this stage of their careers, I wouldn’t see any of these players exceed around the 8 to 900k mark.

I think you can see that there will be some good options for us to build a decent team to challenge for the top 4 moving forward from 2021. To me, it makes more sense to go harder for the limited good halves available rather than throw everything at the Trbojevic boys or Latrell Mitchell. We all got opinions on who we should target moving forward, this was mine – now for yours.

The fact we have 8.5m to spend doesn’t mean we need to buy everything.
The future success lies within setting up good junior systems, not just the junior leagues but feeder systems that get us the best talent from QLD and NZ. Spend the money wisely and build a solid 30 man squad.

Our problem is the current young guys are probably not that good. Until we get access to that 8.5m I would be trying out as many junior players as possible
With that requires patience and lots of disappointment. Can you put up with this another year or two.
Not saying it’s a bad idea but that’s the scenario.

It should be a combination of both. The top clubs don't stack their salary cap in their 1-17, but instead a little more in their 18-30. The club we are and the fans that we have, we need to be competing for finals minimum in 2021.

That’s definitely a realistic time frame. We need to unearth that gem, kind of like what Barbs was to begin with. I have watched a lot of football and enjoy seeing the young ones do well. I can’t see it currently with what we are bringing through but you never truly know until they are tested. To me it looks like we need to pay overs for some solid first graders to get up and running. Love to be proven wrong.
