That's exactly why recruiting someone like Latrell is worth paying extra for. The lure he has in recruiting other players is priceless.

If we can get Latrell for five years it would be the best signing the club made since Terry Lamb. We'd turn into a contender in no time with the other talent he'd attract and the unprecedented cap space at our disposal.
If you had the chance to sign latrell for 1.1m

Or Lomax and xerri for the same price..

Which way would you go?

The Bulldogs are hatching an audacious $5 million play for Latrell Mitchell that would make the dumped Blues star one of the highest-paid players in NRL history.

An intermediary acting for the Bulldogs secretly met with Mitchell’s father, Matt, to discuss the prospect of the young Roosters superstar leaving for Belmore on a $1 million-per-annum deal over five years. While no offer has yet been tabled, it is an indication of the sort of salary the Roosters star can command if he puts himself on the open market.

Mitchell is contracted to the Roosters until the end of 2020, but rival clubs can begin tabling official offers from November 1. The Bulldogs snuck under everyone’s guard when they poached Kiwis captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak from Penrith and now have their sights set on an even bigger coup.

A $5 million payday would make the 22-year-old one of the game’s highest-paid stars. He would join a select few able to command a long-term, seven-figure annual payday that includes Daly Cherry-Evans, Ben Hunt, Jason Taumalolo, Sam Burgess and Anthony Milford.

News of Canterbury’s interest, just days after Mitchell scored two tries against his potential future suitor, adds another layer of complexity in the Roosters’ bid to retain him on an upgraded and extended deal.

The Herald revealed in May that under his existing contract, Mitchell is earning only about $450,000 for the current season. While that figures rises by about $100,000 for the following year, it is about half of what Canterbury and other clubs are prepared to pay him.

The discrepancy is one of the reasons Mitchell split with long-time manager Steve Deacon and recently joined rival agent Wayde Rushton. It is understood Mitchell has been made aware of the Bulldogs’ interest and it may be one of several factors contributing to a dip in form. There have been other setbacks, such as the death of family members in recent weeks and the charging of his brother Lionel for assault stemming from an incident in April.

It’s unclear where the Bulldogs view the long-term positional future of Mitchell, who can play fullback, centre or in the halves. However, the blue and whites feel he is the marquee recruit they can build their club around to help them climb the ladder, as well as attracting other big-names to Belmore.

Loading
Mitchell was the hottest player in rugby league last month after producing a masterclass performance against Wests Tigers. The Taree product hasn’t been able to maintain that level, although his ommission from Brad Fittler’s team for Origin II remains a shock.

The fact the Bulldogs are in a position to even contemplate making such a long and lucrative offer shows how quickly their salary cap position has changed. The Family Club appeared hamstrung on the recruitment front for several years, but a mass exodus of big-money players - including James Graham, Josh Reynolds, Moses Mbye, Aaron Woods and David Klemmer - has left them in a position to target big names from November 1.

While the Roosters are keen to keep Mitchell, they won’t be able to compete in a bidding war for his services given the number of internationals already on their books.

Very good question...

I don't think you could go wrong either way. Xerri looks like he will be elite soon enough. Lomax looks pretty good but there are probably many others like him whereas Xerri stands out more.

But why not both Xerri and Mitchell? If we have $7-8 million to spend then it would be feasible, especially if Mitchell were to play fullback.

If it were one or the other I'd say Mitchell just because of the pulling power and where we are as a club and the fact that he's a genuine superstar already.

What hope do we have when he looks at the options he'd be playing inside/outside of.
Just give the guy early ball and he'll do something.. 5 mill over 5 years.. what a steal.

Putting it over the roosters.. Nobody has currently touched the roosters for how many years now.. time to get some back.

Pretty sure GI was the first piece during South's rise in 2011... they built the team around him then and we can build our next squad around Latrell

The ten year deal is bullshit Nabs. When you have an aboriginal boxer and tattooed Lebo traveling to Taree to broker a deal on behalf of the club you know something is seriously wrong. It’s called amateur hour champ.

I'm sure Robbo, Nick [Politis] and the club have plans in place to keep him at the club.

Cocky pricks. He could've said "the club" He had to mention individual entities.

Maybe maybe not. The gentleman is a very successful business man. Sort of person the club needs to to have around.... The club is actively trying to improve its situation. It takes time and money...

I have confidence in the direction we going. The people involved know what they are doing..

I didn’t say the gentlemen wasn’t a successful businessman. The gentlemen is good to have around. But the way it was done causes division inside the club.
