Cooper Cronk will retire at the end of the season with a 16-year teen sensation earmarked as his replacement.Source: News Corp Australia
Cooper Cronk might’ve only announced his retirement on Monday, but the Sydney Roosters have already been working behind the scenes to snare one of the hottest young talents in the game to be their long-term half.

According to The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield on NRL 360, the Tricolours have earmarked Sam Walker, the 16-year-old son of former player Ben Walker, as Cronk’s long-term successor.

Walker, an Ipswich Grammar Student, currently plays rugby union at school, before switching over to rugby league on weekends for the Ipswich Jets’ under-18s side in the Mal Meninga Cup.

Round 11

This kid could replace Cronk

Such is the talent of Walker, the Brisbane Broncos signed him to a development scholarship at just 12 which finishes this year.

Walker flew to Sydney two weeks ago with his father to talk to Roosters coach Trent Robinson about his future. According to the Telegraph, Roosters star Luke Keary was on hand to persuade him to join the club,

According to the report, up to eight other clubs have been chasing Walker, including the Bulldogs who are understood to have almost doubled the offer from the Roosters.

The Australian Rugby Union are also in the race for his signature.

While Walker is seen as a long-term option for the halfback position, it leaves the Roosters short-handed in the interim, despite having a warchest of $1 million for 2020.

Robinson will consider moving Luke Keary to the No.7 jersey, as has already been tried and tested.

That opens up the No.6 jumper which the club has been steering Latrell Mitchell towards.

Mitchell has played at five-eighth this season already and has stated his desire to wear the jumper full-time.

Any player we get over the roosters is a win hope we get him. Also is Cronk retired immediately to try counter GI's retirement to try beat Souths for Mitchell or is it at the end of year?

I love how whenever they sign a player its for a small amount because no one want that player or he is about to retire or for whatever reason. When that player finishes with them, he frees up 1 million.

Dont know about the media. But ill straight up tell ya this kid is 3 times better than cronk was at that age. So hes off to a good start. Roosters are not dumb.
But we really need this kid. Lewis or cogger couldnt touch this kid on there best day.
This kid makes that jangala b kid u always go on about, look very one dimensional
If u had an eye for talent u should already know this kid has more going for him than Taylor or elgey ever had.

We double the offer, yet he still goes to the rorters because of all the influence there!!

And they will get us an offer more!! No way they miss out on their man..!!

He seems like the real deal. The fact that he's dominating against older competition and is highly recruited makes him more legit. Then when you watch his highlights, he looks a class above. Anyone can look good in a highlights package but he looks to be a complete player. Reminds me of DCE in playing style and is a similar size.

Even if it doesn't pan out, he's worth the gamble and we have nothing to lose. But competing against the Rorters is scary.

If he was that big a superstar he'd be testing himself in NSW Cup, not MM Cup (which isn't even reserve grade). Or Broncos would have promoted him straight through (or to Flegg at least).

He's behind about 4 other halves at the Broncos.

I saw his highlights footage a few months ago on this forum. There are hundreds of kids that play similar to be honest.

Roosters will let us sign him then poach him at 18/19
Why wouldn’t you if you could do it. So many kids flame out between 15-20. Hopefully he doesn’t flame out and by that time he sees a great opportunity with the Bulldogs and doesn’t look around.
