What’s the Buzz: Dogfight over coach Dean Pay’s promotion for rival

Phil Rothfield, The Sunday Telegraph

Coach Dean Pay is embroiled in a row at Canterbury Bulldogs over a series of radio commercials with TV star Erin Molan to promote one of the club’s biggest rivals.

A photo of Pay is also being used on the side of a bus to endorse Bankstown RSL and its recently renovated dining and gaming facilities after a multimillion-dollar makeover.

However, the RSL is Canterbury League Club’s biggest rival.

The Bulldogs recently completed their own $106 million licensed club renovation and hired a new chief executive, Greg Pickering, to attract business and arrest a profit slump from recent years.

Bulldogs coach Dean Pay.

They are desperately trying to rebuild the club that was once among the top three in NSW.

Canterbury League Club gives the Bulldogs an annual grant of up to $7 million. Without them, the NRL team would not survive.

Club chairman George Coorey declined to comment, referring us to Bulldogs football chief executive Andrew Hill who gave Pay permission to do the advertising campaign.

The RSL is a sleeve sponsor of the club’s junior rep teams — Harold Matthews, SG Ball and Tarsha Gale Cup but has no role with the NRL team.

“They’ve (the RSL) put money into our juniors for three or four years,” Hill said.

“It was a one-off opportunity to help another community organisation that pours money into junior sport.”

Hill is one of the game’s most highly regarded young officials but his decision to allow Pay to promote a rival organisation has gone down poorly with Belmore powerbrokers.

Or you could say Pay is helping promote a Club sponsor.

Are they really fierce rivals? The Clubs would be, what, 15 minutes apart?

Rubbish fake news hysteria. On ya Buzz. He prob got stuck into the plonk before writing this goanna shit.

Promoting a sponsor is good business. He’s not used to it because the sharks don’t have any sponsors to endorse.

WTF, I had to read it about 3 times to make sense of it.

The junior teams are part of the club Drunkfield. And by your own admission they're a sleeve sponsor and Pay got permission from the CEO.

The funniest part of the article is "TV Star" Erin Molan hahahaha.

Should rename the column "Whos that Drunk". It's a nothing article, and no doubt he's putting words in peoples mouths.

RSL sponsors all except NRL club.
Pay did advertising promo for RSL club.
Pay is involved as head coach across ALL grades (not just NRL).

The Leagues Club do not considering Bankstown RSL club competition... their aren't even in the same stratosphere. It's akin to saying that St Marys Under 8s is competition for Bulldogs Flegg side.

Canterbury Bankstown Leagues Club gets astronomical pokie revenue (and about 3 times as many machines). It is rated 4th highest revenue from pokies in NSW, Bankstown RSL is rated 20th, Bankstown Sports is rated 2nd.

If it was Bankstown Sports I could understand it as they are pulling in more gaming revenue than Canterbury Leagues (about $132 million compared to League clubs $75 million).

Summary: Rothfields talking out of his arse again.

...and even Bankstown Sports (the bigger competitor) used to be a sleeve sponsor of the NRL side. They are all part of the community together.

Rothfield is a knob jockey.

I suppose when you're done scraping the bottom of that barrell, you have no choice but to lift that barrell and scrape the shit from underneath.
