Trick is to study the animal, it will tell you if it's poor, Good or Pristine.

Plus it will tell you how to get a clean kill.

What is the best way to kill a gator to get perfect gator pelt? I usually lasso other animals but I don't think you can lasso gator's.

What Assassin said. You need to study the animal to see if its pelt is poor, good or perfect. And if you've got a shotgun, one headshot from fairly close range kills them.

If you're in Saint Denis, make sure you kill birds and pluck them. Some birds give you about $2 a feather.
