Why can't the NRL have an NBA like draft and summer league with the 9's being the comp to showcase each team's new rookies. This could lead to the NRL investing into more junior programs and producing higher quality players. Imagine the excitement we would have knowing that we might land a superstar prospect for next season even though we are financially strapped.

Imagine we draft this young halfback with heaps of potential, then we send a few of our younger guys to the 9's, the open game will let them shine and get the fans really excited for the start of the season. Maybe the NRL can have a similar cap exception as the NBA in which teams can pay a higher salary to players they drafted to entice them to stay with there clubs instead of shifting to the bigger richer clubs.

This could also allow the NRL to expand and introduce 2 new clubs, the draft will definitely help kickstart a club.

The only concern I would have is how we deal with the Warriors, it may be difficult to ask young boys to move to another country but im sure those in power would find a way around it.

Teams would have reserve sides just like the ISP where they could call upon players in case of injury or suspension.

It would stop teams like the Panthers stockpiling a lot of juniors talent, and thus will balance out the competition more.

The draft is deemed illegal by the courts.

The NRL should make it every club only has a NRL side and a Reserve Grade side. 30 man squads for each. No team has under 15's, under 17's etc. Every year we have a draft like how the AFL does.

Because a player hasn't taken it to court.
That is incorrect. There has never been a rookie draft in rugby league. You have no idea about this topic.

RLPA took a massive dump on this idea ages ago because it could force players to have to relocate unfairly.

Agree. We should only have 2 sides, a first grade one and reserve grade. We should have independent schools to help develop these players, I know we have private "sports schools" like Keebra park but im sure with added funding we could have higher quality ones, have more in depth education for the coaches and more specialist coaches on board. Everyone talks about the game dying and I don't see how adding a potentially exciting concept which can result in higher quality players can't help that thought.

The NRL off season is 5 months long, it gets super boring and people lose a bit of interest, by adding a draft will get fans excited for the next season, if done right it can help increase the popularity of the game by a big margin.

Right now what do we Bulldogs fans have to get excited about?, imagine knowing that even though we aren't doing to well right now we have the opportunity to draft the next big thing instead of being stuck with other clubs left overs.

I don't see that being an issue, most NRL players have to relocate to further there careers and the fact the majority of the teams reside in 2 states helps that fact.

That was a free agent draft not a rookie draft

Rather than a draft the game would much better off if the NRL banned Back ended contracts, not because our team is in the poo as a result. But because I am sure that it would level out the comp and it would be easy for the NRL to police it (if they wanted to of course).

Terry hill took it to court when he was drafted and won in 1991
He wasn't a rookie. That was a free agent draft. He had already played a whole season. Your post actually backs my argument.

It’s 4 states if you include Canberra and Victoria lol
