How did the club turn the 2008 wooden spooners into minor premiers in 1 year? We should have been minor premiers,the NRL were wrong when we were deducted 2pts for that minor interchange violation.
Coaching and squad changes, playing style, player's fitness, rule changes, off field club problems and participation in representative teams are all important facts to help draw a conclusion. A comparison with representative teams is a quick way to evaluate the squad's level and standard.
The coach:
Steve Folkes retired and Kevin Moore took over in 2009.To definitively conclude whether the new coach had an extraordinary impact,playing styles need to be evaluated,unless squad changes can provide the answer.
The squad:
Players retained for 2009 (bold = regular 1st team members):
Chris Arnit; Ben Barba; Hazem El Masri; Jarrad Hickey; Daniel Holdsworth; Jamal Idris; John Kite;
Charlie Leaeno; Daryl Millard; Brad Morrin; Luke Patten; Ben Roberts; Andrew Ryan;

Summary:
Players retained for 2009...............................: 20 (10 regular 1st team members; 10 squad members)
Players signed for 2009..................................: 9 (All players were regular 1st team members)
Regular 1st team selected players not retained: 6
Squad players not retained.............................: 12
Good contractual management and recruitment enabled the club to climb from last to 1st.
The above numbers paint a clear picture and no further facts are required.
After releasing 6 regular 1st team and 12 squad members the size of the squad was reduced from 38 to 29.The club went on a huge rebuilding spree signing 9 established 1st grade quality players to compliment the 10 that were already in the team.
That should give us hope! I'm a man of law and I recognize a precedent. Grahams's $500k will also be available next year and the salary cap should increase by at least $700k.
These are the players off contract (bold = good chance of releasing):
1st team selected players: Greg Eastwood; Jeremy Marshall-King; Brett Morris; Josh Morris;
Squad members..............:Lachlan Burr; Tom Carr; Mason Cerruto; Josh Cleeland; Asipeli Fine; Matt Frawley; Lachlan Lewis; Rhyse Martin; Clay Priest; Zac Woolford;
But can the club achieve what they did in 2009?
Even if we're as tight as a fish's arse and only use Graham's money to resign and upgrade our young guns.Steal a few of uncle Nick's brown paper bags (he's upgraded to environmental friendly now),clean Frawley up,and work him on Canterbury Road, run a few chuck raffles,buy Woods a ukulele and send him basking, join the Hari Krishna and grow some weed, bribe Greenberg with a transvestite to smuggle in a mil on top of our 2019 cap, the club would not get close to what they did in 2009.
It wouldn't be of no surprise, if those long contracts Des finalized during his last few years at the club are back ended and will eat our salary cap increases for next year and beyond.
The triple D's, Dib 'the slime ball', Des 'the honker' and Dog face Raelene have farted and left us chocking in foul stench.But as Charlie Chaplin once said
"nothing is permanent in this wicked world not even our troubles".
