Careful you don't break your neck falling off that soapbox. These two blokes have brought more joy to kids following league than any other two in the past 40 years. Their toughness, skill and ability to consistently deliver over more than 13 years each is testimony to the fact that they are in the highest bracket of footballers the game has seen. I hate queenslanders, but credit where credit is due these two have re-shaped the way the game has been played. Why shouldn't they get some recognition. It's not about the money, it's about recognising their contribution to the game. One of the reasons comrade why the rich get richer is because they are better and these two epitomise that. Back to the combine for you.
Great post but just remember Queenslanders hate you too lol

Wrong. It is about the money. And thats where my issue is. Theres no doubting their skill and longevity, and im a massive fan of both. I feel priveleged that they have played football while i have watched it. But the NRL allowing them to make a massive payday inside of the salary cap is a massive slap in the face to every other club.

You are absolutely right. Thurston and Smith are both big money earners already. They no doubt have worked hard to earn their reputation and salary, but a lower profile player who's broken their body playing the game won't get this kind of opportunity. A guy like Brad Morrin spent a career in league and left with very little to show except for some aches and pains in his body from the injuries he suffered. There are others who will have left the game with injuries that will plague them for the rest of their lives who won't get these kinds of paydays. No doubt Smith and Thurston will be a good chance of stepping straight out of league into some kind of role within the NRL's media machine too. These kinds of roles don't happen for less recognized players.

Given that Smith is a representative of the players association it paints him in a bad light if he walks away from this deal with a huge payout. The players association should put pressure on him and Thurston to donate any wiondfall they receive from this to funds for those players that have suffered injuries that will ruin their lives. Alex Mckinnon for example would be more deserving than a high paid rep star.
Exactly. Plus if you add all the payments from rep games that they have earned over the years to their already massive salaries, they hardly need the NRL to allow this on top.
Theres no doubt they have earned every cent from their rep careers, but there is no need for the NRL to give them another cash bonanza. And whos to say that they didnt use this as a bargaining chip diring the last contract negotiation? Thurston only recently signed a one year extension.

OK so the facts of it are that players have to have played a min of 250 games with the one club uninterrupted, not brought the game into disrepute, played high level rep footy and a few other quals. So apart from Simon Mannering and Sam Thaiday no-one else counts. The proceeds from the game go mainly to charity with a relatively small carve up between Thurston and Smith - maybe $200k each depending on how many turn up. So, given both players are already on well over $1m a year now particularly with TPA's what's the big deal? It's a trial game so it has no impact on the competition and makes a whole lot more sense than them selling cars or tampons or whatever. At the end of the day we are talking about fans paying homage to a couple of blokes who are absolute icons of the game. Good luck to them.

You have to be absolutely kidding.
Not even a little bit. You think Thurston isn't worshipped by thousands of kids? Have a look at the jumpers on the kids backs all over Qld. Walk around Melbourne and notice the 9's on kids backs. I dunno maybe you think Gallen or Carney or SKD are better role models. It's just that the kids don't agree with you.

Couldn't agree more Smith and in particular Thurston are two of the best ambassadors for the game to junior fans we have had for a very long time.We will see a never ending stream of QLD juniors try to emulate the achievements of these two men
Long may QLD rein supreme lol

If this game doesn't go ahead, will Thurston threaten to boycott things, like he has done for several years.

If this is the case then so be it. But where are you getting this info? Its not what the newspaper article says. Not that i take their say as gospel.
ALL of the money should go to charity though dont you think? Not line their pockets.
In any case, theyre still making money out of an NRL sanctioned event and its not included in the salary cap.
By the way, thurston has had plenty of wayward drunken moments. Clearly you have conveniently forgotten them.

That rules out Mr 2 contracts Smith & Mr I was so drunk I slept on the ground outside of my unit & was arrested outside the Treasury Casino for public nuisance Thurston

All the money goes to Smith & Thurston.

Smith and Thurston could pocket as much as $750,000 each from gate takings, ticket sales and sponsorship arrangements from the game.

Come on you guys. I have a brilliant idea the dogs play a testimonial game for Dessie for his invaluable contribution to the club . For him transforming good players into has beens, for his ability to develop the slowest forwards in the game and to his amazing ability of restricting the players to limited tries this year so that a player of yesteryear aka Hazem could hold more tries to his name in one season than the rest of the team put together. Congratulations Des for creating a football team of duds, you deserve such high accolades because you have made history by producing one of the most negative sides in the NRL and we need to send you off with heaps of money with a testimonial game because you was never paid highly enough at the bulldogs. The club will build a monument to you Des for a solid demolition of a once great proud club.

I reckon over their careers JT and Smith have both received over 10 million thank yous (each) for thier services. I think thats enough. $1.3 million a year when the average wage in Australia is a small % of that or less, is that not enough? What a joke. Even the suggestion they can make rorting the cap this way legal is a joke. And what will allowing this to go ahead lead to? What is the qualifying criteria to get one of these cash raising testimonials? They arent the only 2 good players in the game.

There are people out there struggling to put food on the table for thier families, and doing it tough, yet the NRL think it is a good idea to have a "charity" match for 2 players that have been earning over a million a year for a while and are already rich? Its a fkn disgrace.
