The Newcastle Knights are on the brink of being sold by the NRL in a plan that aims to ensure the long-term success of the club.
The Wests Leagues club will reportedly throw money behind new state of the art training facilities and a cash injection into grassroots rugby league in the Hunter as part of the deal.
The Daily Telegraph reports, Wests will pump $10 million into the new centre of excellence and that lawyers are finalising details with an announcement to be made by the end of the week.
The Knights will reportedly relaunch under new ownership when the club receives its annual $13 million funding from the NRL, with the new owners in support of coach Nathan Brown’s vision for the future.
A source from the NRL told News Corp said having a strong team in the Hunter is in the best interests of the game.
“We wanted to hold out for the right buyer for the club and for the game,” an NRL source said.
“And we all want the Knights to be owned locally so there is community ownership of the club.
“The deal is not quite done yet but this proposal will get the fans the strong club they need, on and off the field.”
Even though the Knights have been struggling at the bottom of the ladder for the last couple of years, they still enjoy phenomenal local support.
Newcastle’s average home crowd is 15,753 this year which puts them fourth in the NRL behind the Broncos, Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters.
