Canterbury Bulldogs and Des Hasler: Where did it all go wrong?

Des Hasler had no say in the club’s strategic plan, but he may be judged according to it. Picture: Justin Brierty

They laid it on the line at the start of 2015. Canterbury officials made a big song and dance as they outlined a strategic plan to make them the country’s premier sporting club in the space of five years.

Two years later and that ambitious missive hangs like a millstone around the neck of every club official, none more so than Des Hasler, despite the coach having minimum input in the plan.

The Bulldogs targeted two grand final wins by 2019 and are yet to produce any. Given the negativity surrounding the club’s exit from the finals and the state of their squad, a premiership next year looks beyond them as well.

They planned a top-four finish every year in the NRL and NYC. This year, the first-grade side finished seventh and exited in the opening week of the finals. The NYC side languished in 11th.

The club talked about contracting local juniors but homegrown players are sparse on the ground and Hasler is the man in the firing line, the bullseye he is now sporting owing much to the club’s inability to meet its goals despite lavish spending on their coach and football department.

Hasler was hailed as one of the club’s greatest signings when he was stolen from Manly by former chief executive Todd Greenberg, in a deal worth in excess of $1 million, and given unfettered power.

He arrived with a flotilla of his own personnel but also with a charter to win the club a premiership. Five years have passed and the club has two grand finals to show for that investment, a worthwhile record anywhere bar the Bulldogs, it appears.

Hasler’s future will be discussed at a board meeting this afternoon with the walls closing in. He may survive, but his power will be heavily diluted and the situation appears untenable.

Sources within the club suggest the swing in momentum hasn’t been sudden, but a gradual build-up of frustration which has exploded over the past fortnight.

Club legend Terry Lamb provided a snapshot of that fury earlier this season when he talked about Hasler not understanding the DNA of the club. It is understood he later apologised to Hasler, although his comments were reiterated this week when former teammate and Bulldogs director Steve Mortimer laid into Hasler.

Club officials insist Mortimer went rogue and his future as a member of the board could now be in jeopardy. But when Mortimer talks, Bulldogs supporters tend to listen. He remains, in many respects, a voice of their people.

The supporters watch Michael Ennis win a grand final at Cronulla and wonder why he was dispensed with in favour of Michael Lichaa, who has struggled to make any imprint at the Bulldogs.

They question the decision to sign Will Hopoate when he refuses to play on Sundays. Mutiny pervades the air around Belmore. Hasler has already felt the backlash, suffering the ignominy of having his staff culled, the spurned including long-time allies Noel Cleal and John Novak.

His football department budget is set to be slashed after a year in which the club suffered financially by disappointing performances and dwindling support.

It is understood the club was nearly $1m under budget this season, their financial performance not helped by fans turning away at a lack of imagination on the field.

The football club is backed by an affluent leagues club that swims in rivers of gold. Yet the leagues club is in the process of undergoing a redevelopment worth more than $100m, so cash isn’t as readily available as it once was.

The days of rampant spending are over. There was a time when members of the coaching staff would point at the smokestacks in the distance when quizzed over their spending.

It is understood this season each and every player was given his own pair of wrestling shoes, another indication of the largesse which exhibited not only Hasler’s attention to detail, but his penchant for extravagance.

More evidence? The NRL covered the travel costs of up to 27 players for interstate and overseas games. Canterbury often took upwards of 35, the extra additions coming out of the club’s coffers.

The purse-strings are now being tightened. There is also the element of self-preservation about the current predicament. Canterbury are due to hold board elections in 2018 but the club’s existing directors will be judged on next season.

If things go pear-shaped again, they may find themselves sacrificed at the membership altar. Yet it is Hasler who is under the gun despite a record that is the envy of many and a reputation which should ensure he finds another job in no time.

The Bulldogs’ strategic plan described their vision as being “the family club that unites and inspires”. Hasler may beg to differ.

All that extravagant spending and nothing to show for. What happened to the hyperbaric chamber?

My only comment is that our board and fans look and sound like Parramatta board and fans. Think about that you dummies.

That strategic plan was all Castle its fine to do that in the corporate world targeting profits and other things but not rugby league all it has down has placed pressure on the club and caused embarrassment. She is so out of her depth it's not funny.

So you are calling for her head for having a plan to succeed yet at the same time calling for Des's head for not succeeding?

Is the article not contradicting it self? He says des is getting all the blame which rightfully he does but then goes on saying the club lost money due to the boring style of play we have and the over spending he has caused during the season. Someone tell this guy make up his mind is he sticking up for des club?

All negative aspects of the past few years point to the head coach and if his not to blame then who is? Lack of recruitment and lower grades looking like crap is all des fault and no one can argue that his the one with all the power and his the one who signed half of manly with him to bring this blue a premiership.

Stupid article by a stupid writer... someone please explain as I just woke up and maybe read it wrong lol

What went wrong for Dessie? there's plenty of things that went wrong under Dessie.

1 - Rule changes: In 2012 if everybody remembers, we were playing the 2nd man decoy on the inside shoulders of defenders which makes it look like an obstruction but we got away with it by scoring tries off those plays, the NRL changed the rules in 2013 so we couldn't take advantage of those plays and Dessie failed to adapt to those new rules with new plays.

2 - Reduction on interchanges: We went from 10 to 8 this year and our forwards were not fit enough to play to adapt to the reduction of the interchange as we were playing 1 out bash and barge football with our forwards and Dessie was too obsessed with quantity rather than quality and that itself stuffed our attacking plays.

3 - Players not playing to their abilities: For all the harsh criticism that Lichaa and Ennis got through here for being too one dimensional out of dummy half as Dessie doesn't allow these guys play their game. When Lichaa was at the sharks, his dummy half runs were impressive and just like Farah and Buderus, Lichaa knew how to run that perfect 'C-Line' from dummy half. Lichaa comes to us, all that skill ability has been coach out of him and he becomes nothing but a robot at dummy half. Same with Ennis under Dessie, he was a robot, he couldn't play his game, then he goes to the sharks, and he is a completely different player as Flanagan gave Ennis the free reigns to do as he please at dummy half.

4 - Players playing out of position: Here's a fact, Reynolds is not a 5/8, Moses is not a halfback, Moses cannot lead and direct our team, at best he is a 5/8. We need to end this '3rd prop' in the lock position as players who play as a lock forward are required to make a high x amount of tackles, think what Stagg, Dymock and Grimaldi did how they cleaned up the middle of the ruck every game they played for us.

5 - Player recruitment/retention: Honestly, this annoys me the most on how can we let go of Dale Finucane to the storm and keep certain players useless and lazy players like T.Williams? Its also pathetic that we let go of Pritchard and still keep a pile of shit like T.Williams at the club.

6 - Junior development: Thank fuck both Cleal and Whitney have been farked off from our club. they had little care for developing our juniors or even have local juniors in our team. Most of our talented local juniors have gone to other clubs. Instead of bringing a local junior or any other juniors to our FG squad, we sign some fringe players from a NSW Cup team who are dead set below average and shouldnt be playing in our FG team. Look at how our u20s, SG ball and Harold Matts have been performing since 2012.

Pretty fair assessment Ozil.
Plus Des' two gun signings in Lichaa and Mbye have turned out to be rubbish. (Their lack of ability or Des's rigid gameplay?)
And the lingering rumours that Des has an iron grip on the game plan that does not win and de-motivates the players.
Rumours that the amazing Frank Pritchard (best player in 2015) was let go because he wanted freedom to play what was in front of him rather than robot style.
Not a good look. Ok if we are winning - but we aren't.

And Bozo and the rest of the Manly Board are probably laughing their asses off right now.

"Thanks for taking this cancer away from our club as well as our laziest player."

Talking out of school*, just like Turvey.

*Speaking "out of school" is making commentary that the speaker has no right to make. Revealing inside information that was never meant to be heard by outsiders for example.

I'll tell you how it all went wrong for Hasler and the Bulldogs.
Haslers stock as a coach is way overpriced and the Bulldogs paid overs for this stock based on a futures return.
Hasler hasnt delivered and as a result his stock is worth sweet fuck all right now but the Bulldogs to save face and try and get some return are looking to invest even further in Hasler stock in the hope that they see some return to their initial investment.

If Hasler was to be paid a performance based fee for his collective efforts he should be on no more than 350k per season and even that is pushing it , considering the erosion we have seen at our club under his watch from our juniors to the lost Football identity of our club.

Hasler is a modern day thief . He has pulled the wool over our eyes and it has taken us 5 years to realise we have been short changed.

Im pretty sure they changed the rule you refer to in point one just before the finals/ late in the season. We were destined to win and then they changed the rule and we had no plan b. Except those stupid cross field kicks which they tried every set in the grand final despite storm defusing it time after time
