We normally have a steadfast NO POLITICAL THREADS rule on here, but given this is a major event in itself, here's a consolidated discussion thread.

I'm sure there will be some discussion generated as the votes are tallied and counted on Saturday night, before a confirmation count on Sunday.

Keep it clean, civil, and respectful of others decisions.

and

1. DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!!!
2. Up to $180 court enforceable fine if you don't!
3. Polling places close at 6pm SHARP and even out of area you can vote declaration vote (as long as you are not interstate). If you are interstate you'll need to head to an interstate polling booth (and there are very few of them around).

Oh no not a political thread.
This is how it's always seen by many in Australia and even on this forum

If you're educated-vote liberal
If you're uneducated and poor-vote labor

If I do vote labor my reason is Emma Husar is better looking than Fiona Scott and a cougar!

i actually drove my parents to the pre polling both for them to vote. Stupid me should have also voted then. Wayne Swann was a nice enough fellow, he helped us to the right room as we were lost (and didn't pressure their vote - but wouldn't have mattered since they live in a different state).

The Government should win, but with a lowered majority. Undecided voters tend to stick with the status quo. The Brexit vote may have been that final push the Coalition needed (you no, times of uncertainty, blah blah blah - hey, it worked for Howard).

Not necessarily.

Inner city seats often vote to the left (although Labor's votes here are shifting to the Greens). They are usually more educated and higher incomes than average (some will dub them "Chardonnay socialists"). Melbourne's inner city is held by the Greens, Sydney Labor and the one in Brisbane will be quite close and interesting.
Outer suburban seats can often vote right (like "Howard's Battlers" in 96).

and for some reason Country people continue to vote for the Nationals despite doing nothing for them (I grew up in the country). In my view, a new "country party" should be formed and be properly independent of another party.

Even immigrants don't vote Labor like they once did. Every Chinese person I know (except one) living here will be voting Liberal.

Yeah my grandfather always votes the Libs.
I find I like half of labor policies and half of liberals policies!
It would be good if a 3rd major party formed (not the greens in my eyes they aren't a political party) with all the good policies of both lab and lib, just to shake things up a bit.

I only started voting a few years ago since the AEC caught up with me via the ATO.
My first vote went to Liberal, not because I support them, but I read the telecrap while working at the Easter show.
And day after day reading about how Mike Baird is bum buddies with Tony Abbott, I thought I'm not going to waste my vote, I knew liberal were getting in regardless, so there was no need to donkey vote!

Take a look at this... a VERY interesting read: http://www.abc.net.au/news/federal-election-2016/map/

The voter map shows that the areas that are Labor, most Labour divisions are ALP strongholds (most with a large swing). For the Liberals if varies (from strongholds to marginal seats).

There are 14 seats in either NSW or Australia (Australia I believe it is), which are marginal ALP seats.

As a whole, most of the divisions Australia wide are Liberal strong, with small clusters/pockets (in captital cities) of very strong ALP areas. Sydney almost has a belt heading west stopping at the mountains. North/North West is LNP, South/South West LNP, Far west (mountains/penrith) is LNP. The majority of ALP strongholds are either in mining areas, lower socio economic areas, or ethnically strong areas.

This is why the ALP are worried in Sydney, as they hold a few divisions in key electorates with < 3% swing to them. With changes to the boundaries and more middle income earners moving into house and land in western sydney, it's got the ALP concerned.

Greenway is VERY marginal, and half of Chifley has been redeveloped for house and land at the moment. Parramatta is very marginal too.

Could be interesting times ahead.

That would be far too sensible

If Australia can find the next Josip Tito, then we won't need to hold elections for another 40 years.

Here's a couple of things you should know about this election:

1) This is a double dissolution. That means that all senate seats are open to be voted on

2) Senate reforms are now in place. That means that voting has changed. In the past if you put a 1 in a box and left the rest of the boxes out then your vote goes to the party you chose and that party then chooses where your preference votes go to. This means that you could vote 1 for labor and you would actually be voting 1 to labor, 2 to greens, 3 to Bob the Builder party, etc. With the senate reforms when you vote 1 for the party you choose your vote goes to that party and they don't get any other preference votes thrown anywhere else. That means that if you vote 1 for the pirate party above the line then the pirate party will get your vote and the other parties will get nothing.

This is can be a double edged sword. It means that the minor parties are no longer getting seats from unmarked preference. This means if you have a minor party you like then you must vote for them or they will not get anything. This also means that if a large number of people mark 1 next to a minor party then that party will get a lot of seats in the senate and the major parties will lose a lot of seats.
