Andrew Johns is already an immortal
My suggestion here is many would think Andrew does not deserve the immortal status yet Matty does.
You can become an immortal and still be in a position when others think you shouldn't.
Matty obviously believes he should be an immortal.

Everyone, of course is entitled to an opinion.

I appreciated your comment.

Everyone has their views in the Bulldog halves. Not long ago people thought Mbye was the new messiah and they were calling for Hoddo's head.
People listen to Matty Johns like peple listen to Ray Hadley and Alan Jones. Some people hang on their words.

I'm not sure what you mean by are halves are not the issue. John's has made them the issue yet it is easy to make them so.

I don't think they are the issue and believe they will stand up next year. Their combination has been hardly tested for peats sake.
Both have the worse kicking and passing game in the comp. that pretty much sums it up

Well, for the bulk of the last few years the forwards have been running the backs so perhaps some of these guys with hefty legs and boots could be asked to keep up their wonderful passing game and take over the tactical kicking as well.

I appreciate your post.

I am still backing Mbye to come good! He would have learnt heaps this season through the adversity of having all our hopes on him. He was asked as a rookie to hold up Hodko and Reynolds as the stable half in our team. Had to be the rock for the finals. He would maybe admit he hoped to finish better but if we put him at that 5/8 spot with more time next year he will go okay I think. Next and bigger questions for me is who is the halfback to partner him? Has to be a planner type player like Hodko but healthier, fitter, faster with a great kicking game? I'd favour giving one of our rookies a go, everything we do needs a revamp! I hate to say it.

Hodko was playing for a contract, thus the increase in form.

Cook and Chisholm MIGHT be options, and that allows Lichaa to slot back in at hooker.
The Matty Johns show also highlighted our current years problems stemming from a poor dummy half aka Liccha who Brandy said has limited attacking prowess. THAT is the root cause of our problem compared even to last year. What they liked about the Dogs was the unearthing of Cook. Honestly, if Des was smart hed be throwing the positions of halves and hooker open. Let any kid from any club try out for halfback during the trials...you dont know who you might unearth. Tell all our guys to work tirelessly on their passing and kicking game....practice and practice some more. Employ a goddam proper halves and kicking coach. If Liccha is to play hooker he MUST be able to offer a variety of kicking options, if he cant produce, make way for Cook.

The way Mbye faded towards the back end of the season was very strange...does anyone have a theory? Reynolds had a very disrupted year with injuries and suspensions, so can be partly excused. All the talk from Grub before last weeks game about how he and Mbye were going to lead the team around looks so embarrassing now.

Ahhh...if only we had gone after Maloney...we'd be right in the mix next season. (With Maloney on board the Matty Johns show suggested sharks are definite top 4 contenders next year) I hope the Dogs Board asks the recruitment office why Maloney wasnt even approached. We fans deserve an answer.

no matter how you want to look at it, halves are not the issue Des is!

Stop fcking blaming Reynolds for not becoming a quality half being in the game for 5 years.

Des is equally to blame for his pathetic plays with a team which most of the time looks uncoached.

The problem is that both Reynolds and Mbye are 5/8's who rely on a halfback directing the team while they both play off that. We need an actual halfback to play in the 7 with either Reynolds at 6 with Mbye in the 1 or to put Mbye in the 6 and release Reynolds.
The way the game is structured now, there are three halves. 1/2, 5/8 and hooker. They play left and right halves.
The old style of playing a half and a five eight is gone, but Super-coach doesn't realise that. Hasler's biggest problem is that he has not evolved with the modern game. He is 5 years behind the progressive coaches.
He has also failed in his recruitment, in that he has recruited the wrong type of player for the modern game. I think it's to late to change him.

I agree about the recruitment but how does a coach who is supposedly five years behind the modern coach even make a GF? Or is he just behind this year and not last? He is not 5 years behind anyone that is just ridiculous. He has made 11 straight finals, not even the Great Bellamy and Bennett have done that. Yes the game plan didn't work it failed and now he has to change things but to say he is five years behind is silly. Everyone thought Bennett was light years behind after his absolutely shit house coaching stint at Newcastle turns out he is still up there. All that has happened is he made a style and structures to suit our lack of halves, it has not worked and now he has to try something else and that's it.

I'm willing to give these guys the off-season to get their shit together.

Reynolds had a disrupted season with injuries and suspensions and never really got to string a large number of games together, while Mbye is still freaking young and experienced. Mbye is going to improve out of sight come Round 1 next year... only thing that worries me with Mbye is all this contract talk.
His brother has been a distraction as well from whats going on..

Hopefully next year he can fire

The halves are shit we all no it, Des has got to wake up from his slumber get the team attacking again and using our back line and giving them space to move. Our forwards are crowding the backs out and they have little room to move. If We all wake up the man that has just come into the team Cook is the answer for half back, he has speed great passing game, his defence is up there with the best in our team. The other thing he has is he can read a game and he will give the team direction. If the coaching staff put a bit of time into him and get his kicking game going which wouldn't be hard with practice he could be the leader we need to get us to play a more attacking exciting brand of footy.

Whichever way you look at it, Des is the person to blame.

Reynolds has been under Des since 2012. Nil improvement. If anything, he has gone backwards. Lacks the absolute fundamentals of a good quality half. Poor kicking game, poor passing game, poor organisational skills. Des is a former NSW and Australian rep half. There should be no excuses for his halves' performances and lack of development. If they are not up to it, drop them, get rid of them, all of the above etc.

Moses has got more ability and potential than Reynolds, but his instincts are being coached out of his game. Its all about stupid completions, and holding onto the ball. More emphasis needs to be put on Try assists, line break assists, runs per game, 40/20s, return sets, and stats that they can own, rather than a team completing a boring set. The same can be said about Lichaa and Cook too.

As much as I hate Mattty Johns and co, sadly they are spot on.

While I wasn't impressed with the latter half of the season, I'm not going to write off our halves when the 2016 season is ****ing 6 months away. I'll give them every opportunity to improve over the offseason before throwing them under the bus.

Lichaa was coming good before he broke down. Des was limiting how he played.

With
1 BMoz
6 Mbye
7 Cook
9 Lichaa

We would have the fastest spine of any team.

I'm hoping to see more of the combination Reynolds and Mbye forged in the win over the Raiders in Canberra earlier this year. A solid off-season with them working together will be a great benefit. Gotta remember Reynolds didn't get a proper chance to train during the off-season due to his shoulder reconstruction. Hoping he doesn't need more surgery this off-season.

Hokko's game picked up this year as he recovered from his off-season surgery and got his knee right. We will miss him big time but unfortunately the guy has no knees and is one bad tackle away from retirement. I guess the club didn't want to gamble on keeping him only for that to happen and lose Mbye in the progress.

My wish would be for Sherwin to come in as a specialist kicking coach for the halves but that's not going to happen any time soon. Spoke to the man himself recently and he said he's offered his services a few times only to be turned down.

Mbye is young and may be buying into the hype surrounding him. Hopefully the off-season will give him a chance to settle in the position that is now his own and develop the combinations needed to be successful.

What happened to Reynolds he was a great player and now his gone down hill and mbye well under presure he failed
Reynolds and Mbye are both great players if there is zero pressure on them. If they are just thrown into the game and told to do whatever they want then they will do brilliantly. Put them in the halves without a good halfback and they crumble.

Hardwork from our forwards? Lol no. They got dominated by other packs most the year, the only forwards that played direct and at speed were Klemmer, Jackson and Frank, everyone else wanted to be a ball player and all they really did was take away time and space from our halves and outside backs.

We need to move on from this ball playing forward rubbish, you can't structure a team around it and expect to be good enough to win a comp. I have never seen a forward get tackled side on as much as Graham did this season.
