just seen roddy rodstars thread about tv ratings and made me think of this thread
so with a quick bit of research from the links provided by roddy, perth has proven it is VERY interested in state of origin
the ratings in the previous 3 years where channel 9 showed it at prime time 7:30pm (not live, but still prime time) rated out of sight, in a non-traditional league city that is currently not exposed to the game on tv until about midnight on a friday and sunday night and doesn't have it's own team (both of which would increase interest in the game)
in game one this year, it was shown at 10:30pm and the ratings were not good, understandably, but there was still plenty of viewers
game two, it was shown at 9:30 and the ratings increased markedly
game three at 8:30 and the ratings were more than double (not far from tripled) than game one this year
it goes without saying, if it was shown at 7:30 again, the ratings would have been much bigger again and looking at the results there, would have rated much, much higher than the crap tv shows they decided to broadcast in that timeslot on all 3 occasions
it is clear the ONLY reason channel 9 put the game into the later time slots in perth, is to make sure it won the ratings in them time slots, because outside of NSW and QLD, masterchef was a more attractive option for viewers at 7:30, more to the point, in perth, even though origin would have still rated very well in a non-traditional league city without it's own team or any significant exposure to the game at all
in conclusion: perth is VERY interested in state of origin, as well as league in general and that's further consistently good signs for the comp for when the perth reds will get included in the next couple of years, as so strongly supported by so many people involved in the comp in significant roles of the NRL
looking forward to it
