We need to avoid recruiting players who are looking to maximise their retirement fund… Critta is a great buy for whatever we paid him, young, healthy, motivated and professional - I’m not sure Luai ticks all those boxes but yes, we should be a better team with him in it… Gus does not want to fuQUOTE]

I’m not that fussed on Luai … I’d much prefer to focus on props, but Gould & CC know this and they know what they’re doing ..

Maybe props just aren’t possible right now ..

If Luai signs he’ll be wearing blue & white so I’ll be behind him 100%

If we are winning - who cares? Buying the Panthers team is a bit overstated. Don’t we have like 3 players?
Some people might not remember or too young to know how we've also suffered from mass desertions...
1978, 9 players to Newtown.
1989, 7 players to Wests.
1995, 4 players to the Slimy Eels and others to ARL aligned teams, as a result of the super league ARL war.
Mid 2000's, 6 players to the Rorters.
And then there was the Terrible Twins Greenberg & Hasler who destroyed our pathways ( juniors ) system.

Those 4 players to the Eels all marquee men….
We also lost a few to the Panthers when they found success in the 90’s (from memory Peter Kelly, Chris Mortimer, Paul Dunn and maybe one other)

so with so many people not wanting to sign Luai who do they want us to sign for 5 years until our juniors are ready? Surely
Sexton is not the answer
Sexton is 22.
for all anyone knows, he could be the next JT. then in 6 years time the same fuckers will be on here saying “should’ve given him time” “he was always going to be a gun” “Gus fucked up”

The last part of that is wrong. If he does good for him but you need to judge of what he's already done because by the time you find out if he's good enough or not there's nothing on the market. You need to recruit 1 year in advance. Anyways if we miss out on Luai there's nothing on the market anyways.

If we're making up scenarios then I could be the next billionaire. I juat wasn't born into a rich family that could give me a small loan of a million dollars.

Penrith superstar Jarome Luai was a no-show at training on Monday amid tensions surrounding his decision to quit the Panthers and join the Wests Tigers.

Luai’s representatives told the Panthers the five-eighth would not be at training, 48 hours after he had informed coach Ivan Cleary and his teammates he would be leaving his boyhood club for the Tigers at the end of the 2024 season.

Sources with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity to speak freely said Luai needed time away from the club after this masthead on Saturday broke the story of his forthcoming departure to the Wests Tigers.

Luai has not requested a release, although his no-show could prompt the Tigers to push for his immediate transfer to Concord. That would hinge on Penrith agreeing to release him, Luai being willing to leave and the Tigers finding the salary cap space to match his current $780,000 deal.

Luai was at training on Saturday when the Herald reported he was planning to sign a mammoth five-year, $6 million deal with the Tigers from 2025.

He was forced to address the issue with his teammates and told them of his expected departure at season’s end to link up with Tigers coach Benji Marshall at the back-to-back wooden spooners.

Luai then left Penrith’s training facility more than an hour before his teammates.

The Panthers were scheduled to train until Wednesday this week but Luai decided not to rejoin the group on Monday. It is unclear if he will return to training on Tuesday.

Luai did not respond to calls and the Panthers declined to comment when contacted on Monday.

The Tigers could offer Luai more money than he is currently earning at Penrith if he wants to leave the champions before his contract is due to expire.

The Panthers have already paid Luai for two months’ service since the start of the rugby league calendar year on November 1, which would save the Tigers around $150,000.

Tension between Luai and the Panthers has been simmering in the background since comments from Cleary two months ago when he said rival clubs would be taking a risk if they offered his playmaker more than $1 million a season to be their No.7, given his inexperience in the role.

Following Cleary’s comments, Luai seemingly took a pot shot at his coach on Instagram, posting an image to his story with the tagline “know your worth”.

At the time Penrith had offered Luai a two-year deal worth around $1.7 million, but have since increased that offer to three years for around $2.55 million.

That is nowhere near the offer on the table from the Tigers, who are on the verge of securing Luai’s services for around $1.2 million per season. The club and Luai’s management are now putting the finishing touches on the deal.

Under the new NRL rules, players are required to lodge an intention to sign a new deal with the NRL, which then notifies the incumbent club and gives it 10 days to come up with a counter offer.

The paperwork is yet to be lodged with the NRL, but the Panthers are expected to waive the 10-day period and don’t have the appetite to get into a bidding war with the Tigers. The Bulldogs, who had verbally offered Luai a five-year deal, are still monitoring the situation.

And you might be more likely to become a billionaire than Sexton is to become the next JT, but the fact is, no one knows. He’s 22 ffs and at least he’s a genuine halfback. Cody Walker was playing in the NYC and 4 years away from his NRL debut at 22.
my position is simple, unless a genuine superstar half becomes available I’d rather stick with what we have and spend the money on forwards.

We're not spending money on forwards either

Back then we lost plenty but replaced them with quality. Now days we buy other clubs rejects expecting to turn them into quality, but the old saying you can’t polish a turd holds true.

If he was a dominant half I would agree. I’ll be shocked if he gets picked for origin next year with Fittler gone. His shoulder sounds bad too. I’ll honestly find it hard to back him because he carries on like such a fuckwit & I’ve expressed that opinion to Gus too
With Daddy's boy in front of him, despite him being in front of Daddy's boy growing up, it does not surprise he plays a back seat role, as he likely has been 'advised' to do as such if he likes his job.
Still not sure about him due to his on-field antics and shoulder alone.
Playing second fiddle for a decade likely has destroyed any natural game he had as a half as well.
I rather we get some decent forwards, so our halves have something to play off.
