Phil Gould has crisis meeting with exiled Bulldogs captain Raymond Faitala-Mariner

Unwanted former Canterbury club captain Raymond Faitala-Mariner has held crisis talks with Canterbury boss Phil Gould just days after being told to stay away from the club.

This masthead was sent a photo of the emergency meeting between Gould and Faitala-Mariner at Canterbury League Club on Saturday morning after the pair were captured deep in talks by a member of the public.

Faitala-Mariner was accompanied by his agent Ernesto Santone. The forward’s distinguished hairstyle made him easily stand out at the club’s headquarters.

The get-together occurred less than 48 hours after the 30-year-old was told to stay away from training despite the rest of the squad starting pre-season training on Friday.

Faitala-Mariner has severely fallen out of favour with the club hierarchy just months after being trumpeted as club captain.

He was given permission to leave the Bulldogs when he was free to talk to rival clubs in September. However, he is yet to find a suitable alternative with two years remaining on his deal worth about $400,000 a season.

The RLPA are expected to intervene if the situation between the Bulldogs and one of their most experienced players cannot be rectified.

They have sought further information surrounding Faitala-Mariner’s treatment. He made 14 appearances for the club in 2023 and has been a mainstay in the top grade since joining the Bulldogs midway through 2016 from the Warriors.

It is understood the relationship between Faitala-Mariner and the club became strained after he raised concerns over training on behalf of some of his teammates.

He played his last game for the club in round 21 against Penrith but has been unsighted since.

While Faitala-Mariner was a big-name absentee on Friday, a host of players including Bronson Xerri took part in their first training session as a Bulldog.

Fellow new recruits including Stephen Crichton, Josh Curran, Kurt Mann and Drew Hutchinson will filter through training in the next few weeks.

Gus looks thrilled to be there. lol

Topine was re-signed by Gould in 2022. He was signed for 2 years. That's very reasonable for a kid who was 20-21 at the time. This year he had to twice come on and play centre. On both occasions we had a specialist 5/8 on the bench and our best centre wearing no.6 and it was Topine thrown to the wolves especially against Campbell Graham.

Topine is a squad player and no doubt signed accordingly. Gould never made a mistake signing him for 2 years.

I have seen some character slandering of Topine and it's not nice.

If Topine isn't re-signed for 2025 he will have no issues finding a club. He turns 23 next year. His football is still in front of him.
The club has made it clear that they are taking things seriously with topine and giving him the best support possible, but you won’t hear that from any media outlets.
Watch the media come out and do the opposite.

I feel this is more on Cam than RFM I wouldn’t be surprised if Cam didn’t want a bar of him after he went to him about the players. Not a great sign of a man manager

Hope they don’t feel sorry for him and let him back.
Pressure reveals character and he’s revealed himself as a shitcunt.
Time to move on.
Out of curiosity what evidence do you have on the situation? Must be rock solid to label him a shitcunt

This has been my belief all along. Ciraldo is an inexperienced coach and it's possible that something very small turned into something very big due to his mismanagement of the situation. A captain approaching a coach and sharing the players thoughts is something very normal in sport and something coaches around the world constantly deal with.

One thing that I consistently bring up on here that so many brush off is our injuries. The amount of training injuries we had was not normal and they weren't just soft tissue injuries but concussions too. Something clearly wasn't going right at training. I also think back to someone like Kiraz and wonder how on earth did he passed his fitness test when he returned from his knee injury. The bloke was literally limping his entire first game back and took weeks to even look comfortable on the field. He then finished the season with stress fractures in his lower back and that's something that can be caused by not correctly managing a player training load.

Couldn't you explain the injuries on a difference in training regimes? It seems pretty well documented that our boys weren't used to being pushed beyond the edge, perhaps CC simply pushed them too hard?
