Sport Confidential: Bulldogs’ $3 million war chest is a myth

The Bulldogs’ $3 million war chest is a myth, according to boss Andrew Hill.
The much-hyped figure was a “pre-Christmas” number well before the club signed the likes of Luke Thompson and Nick Cotric. They have also extended Raymond Faitala-Mariner, Will Hopoate, Josh Jackson, Reimis Smith and Brandon Wakeham.
Hill is expected to meet with incoming coach Trent Barrett in the coming days to work out what their next movements are in terms of their roster. They have offers out to Adam Elliott and Kieran Foran about extending their time at the club.
“We will work on that in the next couple of weeks,” Hill said.
Luke Thompson has taken up a fair bit of the Bulldogs war chest.

“Trent’s key focus is at Penrith but in his own time and away from his commitments, myself and (head of football) Steve Price will be talking to him around roster management and staff appointments.

“You’ll never hear us confirm (how much we can spend) but that figure everyone keeps saying is at pre-Christmas levels. It’s come down but we have a good amount to spend on the right talent.
“We are linked with every player that’s either off-contract or looking for another opportunity, we are not having a scatter gun approach. We will target what we think we need. Trent will be part of that and we will work quietly behind the scenes to build our roster.”
Meanwhile, Elliott continues to do good things away from the field. The injured lock is raising money for Autism community network.
Elliott pledged to dye his hair blue once that target reached $1000. The money raised is more than $4000 which will also mean his brother James will dye his hair.

The NRL and the RLPA are about $25 million apart when it comes to cost-cutting measures for the next three years.
Discussions between the two parties are ongoing and includes a potential roster cull.
The salary cap could drop by about five per cent but cost savings are being explored in other areas including injury hardship, marketing and representative payments.

If Jackson (700K) and Hopa (450K) also came out of that 3M then we can't have much cap left at all for 2021. There's going to be so many fans (me included) really pissed if we don't get a quality hooker for 2021 in particular. JMK is nowhere near the class of a top hooker and I can't see him ever being one. It's such an important position and such a focus of our attack we need to get it 100% right after so many years.

Tactics so player managers won't ask for too much money ? I hope that's true but I'm not too confident in that theory.

If we don't get a decent new hooker for 2021 it surely has to prove that we've overpaid for the majority of our current roster. If you go through the figures for what our top 30 should be on (even with the excessive payments to DWZ 550K and Jackson 700K) we should still have plenty of cash up our sleeves. If that isn't the case then someone has seriously f..ked up !

I think it makes sense. So much good news has come in the past 2 weeks, plus players want to play for Trent.

Can you explain this? Why would lafai be 350? We've resigned a bunch aswell? Youre almost validating what Hill is saying

I'm expecting something along these lines.

**The salaries I've given the players is what I believe they're on (not a fact). It's an estimated guess from what I've gathered/think.**

1. Hopoate 500k
2. DWZ 500k
3. Cotric 600k
4. ?
5. Meaney 200k
6. Foran 400k
7. ?
8. Thompson 800k
9. ?
10. Napa 600k
11. Jackson 600k
12. RFM 300k
13. Elliott 500k

14. JMK 200k
15. To'omaga 300k
16. ?
17. C. Smith 200k

5.7m/9.9m

Theoretical signings (and extentions)
+Cotric 600k
+Lafai 300k
Foran 400k
+Burton 300k
+B. Smith 800k
RFM 300k
Elliott 500k
Sue 200k
Wakeham 200k
= 3.6m

Total = 7.3m (7.1m with Jackson's veteran allowance)

18-30
~200k (~215k with Jackson's veteran allowance)

IMO the "3m war chest" wasn't a myth. It does depend on when it was stated tho (I believe we're currently closer to 2m). I'm also being on the safe side, our 18-30 would more than likely be on less than that average.

According to Zero tackle we have 21 signed for the 2021 season squad, and only Roumanos as a development player. Presumably Winters-Chang, Tui Katoa, Doorey will be re-signed with development contracts at minimum wage, and either Harding or another youngster.

Confusingly, Zero Tackle has 31 players in our 2020 squad, not sure how that works.

Anyway, assuming we don't move any development players to the full squad, we still need at least 8 signatures by the first cut off date, and there are 8 non-development players off contract. Foran and Elliott have been offered deals, if they get signed that leaves 6 spots. There are rumours about Cogger, Montoya, and Holland not going to be offered new deals. A lot of people don't want to see Tolman re-signed. Lafai and Sue are also off contract.

My question is this, how realistic would it be to sign more than 3 new players for 2021 between now and November? I can maybe see up to 3 new signings, given who is still on the market off contract from November, but more than 3 is starting to be a bit of a stretch. For a start there isn't a whole lot out there, its mostly development players, old guys looking for one final contract, or NSW Cup players like Frawley.

Tom Starling would be a good get for #9, Kane Evans or someone like that might be gettable for another big body up front, and there are a few quality outside backs on the market. There is very little in the way of halves. I just don't see us landing more than about 3 new names, realistically. And if Foran and Elliott don't re-sign, that increases the number of new signings we need to fill the squad. Although if Elliott leaves an option is to promote Doorey from development to full squad.

go dogs.
My understanding is $1.5m for 3 years with year 1 = $300k, year 2 = $500k and year 3 = 700k.
Average $500k but saving $700k from year 3.

And I agree

Without doing a critique on every player;
You have players 18 to 30 on more than JMK ($200k) who is a regular in our NRL 17.
Same with Meaney, you have him at $200k, that's Cogger money and he's not in the 19 regularly, both JMK and Meaney should be $300k to $350k.
RFM just resigned and as a regular in the 17 he will be on more than $300k, closer to $400k.
Jackson is $100k under, should be $70Ok.
Sue is also a regular in the 19 and $200k is at least $50k maybe $100k too low.

What you need to do it start off by guessing this years contracts and then increasing them from your current low guesses until you get to $9.6.m. If I add up what you have above and add this year's players into the gaps I get around $8.5m so you are about $1.1m short.

Doesnt make sense cos thats not what we will be freeing up if he isnt resigned for 2021
Agree, but I can't even guess what the deal is with StGeorge, maybe were are picking up more than the rest of the season, maybe we aren't paying anything much at all. It doesn't alter the end result much either way, if we leave him out all together it's still $3.75m which is lot more than "the mythical $3m".

I never claimed "accuracy", but I know that the current contract is back ended and it was reported at $1.5m for 3 years. So it might be different to 3/5/7, might be 4/5/6 but in the overall context it's irrelevant. Because if we haven't spent it on Tolman then we spent it one someone else, because it still has to add $9.6m.

Of course
