Sharks young gun Bronson Xerri has knocked back a five-year $2.5 million deal with Cronulla and will test his value on the NRL’s open market as of November 1 this year.

Contracted until the end of 2021, Xerri has been the subject of continued speculation with back-to-back premiers Sydney Roosters repeatedly linked to the Cronulla centre.

The Sharks attempted to blow rival NRL clubs out of the water by tabling a five-year contract to keep the local junior in the Shire.

But Fox Sports has learned Xerri has passed on the offer and will instead focus on returning to playing strong football off the back of off season shoulder surgery.

Xerri, 19, made his debut for Cronulla in round four last season before going on to score 13 tries in 22 appearances for the Sharks.

Good judges reason it will only be a matter of time before the powerful teenager breaks into the representative football arena.

With Xerri making his name as a left centre, the link to the Sydney Roosters makes sense following the departure of Latrell Mitchell to South Sydney.

But there is no way Cronulla will be releasing Xerri to a rival club this season.

Xerri is also close mates with new Roosters recruit Kyle Flanagan, who will partner Luke Keary in the Tricolours halves this season.

Under the NRL rules, rival clubs are unable to table an official offer to Xerri before November 1 this year but are free to speak to his agent at any time.

Working in Cronulla’s favour is the fact coach John Morris handed Xerri his NRL debut and enjoys an extremely tight rapport with the young gun centre.

The Sharks are currently in camp down the NSW south coast in Kiama.

Hope we are preparing an offer for him and blow the Roosters out of the water. He could be our long term centre solution.

Smart move. That's a long contract for that money.

Must be great to be a Rooster fan Christmas never stops. Must be pretty festive with uncle Nick playing Santa all year round. Cars, boats, units, Brown paper bags full of the good old folding stuff no problem. But of cause no one would ever challenge his motives or the chooks.Nor would they ever dare to speak up and tell the truth. If they ever did he would probably buy the NRL and pencil the roosters in as premiers for the next 20 years. Ho Bloody Ho. Fuck him and his feather duster KFC bunch.

He'll go to the Roosters. No other club can compete. The competition is a farce. We'll have millions in cap space and no one worthwhile to spend it on. It doesn't matter how much more we or other clubs offer..

You know the competition is a joke when the top players only seriously consider the same two or three teams.

I don't understand why players reject money and force their club to go to the drawing board again, wasting everyone's time (including their own). It's simple... their agent should ask them what they want (while having an idea of his own what they are worth), and take this to the club. The club either says yes or no... that's it.

Nothing to do with the Rorters, just a kid with a good head on his shoulders... 5 years with a club who are on the downslide for an amount that he is likely to be worth much more than in a few years? yeah screw that

That makes total sense from his perspective. I understand rejecting the deal. But the Roosters have a hole at centre and Xerri has been linked to them since day one so it seems inevitable. They have a knack for pillaging the best talent from the feeder clubs..

Going to be the Latrell saga all over again.

Will he sign? This clubs offered this, that club offered more, who’s the front runner, big offer from that other team, he could really turn this team’s fortunes around, back and forth, back and forth, is he really that good, he’s not worth that much, that’s what you have to pay, I wouldn’t pay that, blah, blah, blah.....

Save your breath, he’ll sign with the Rorters for unders, and they’ll “compensate” him under the table

Cronulla are playing hardball, and rightly so, as they already lost Flanagan to them and will hold onto Xerri as long as possible so they get another season out of him and to try and convince him to stay if they up their offer..

I still think he'll end up at the Roosters, but i agree that he has a lot to work on and has been getting by on natural physical ability more than anything so far.. He's far from the finished article.

That hole is only for this year so if we can't get Xerri for 2020, there's no point going after him for 2021 as we'll have Billy Smith back.

He has massive potential but at this stage in his career 500k sounds more than fair. He needs to make massive improvements to his positional play

Roosters aren’t really known being loyal to players. If they could sign Xerri and move Billy Smith on they would do it ASAP.

I think the Roosters can, and will do better personally.. why bother with a kid when they can pinch an experienced player
