With the changing of the guard and this management turning to junior development again as its number 1 priority.

Was wondering from this years batch of juniors, im talking under 20s and lower, do we have any juniors earmarked for future stardom.

And which grade made the finals?

Its been years since we saw a ben barba/Sbw type of player coming through the grades and getting us fans excited about the future .

Unfortunately if we do uncover another SBW or another Barba, the negatively publicity by the media and others will also turn them against our club.

The word 'development' club in its strictest meaning is overrated.. most clubs can develop players once the players are in their system.. the number of clubs that havent been able to develop young talent is minimal if any..

Good scouts is a crucial part of the process.. that saw the club bring over SBW from NZ and Barba & Thurston from North QLD, and theres an endless list of great talent identification weve done over the years..

Brisbane and Penrith identify themselves as 'development' clubs they havent won a comp since 2006.. meanwhile clubs with great recruitment of juniors and also top players have won many more competitions..

In summary Development is necessary for all NRL clubs.. but great talent scouts and great recruitment set the top clubs from the others most seasons..

Melbourne develop very strong players, but they have no local junior base, so they are making many right decisions in identifying and recruiting the right players..

Cooper beasly FB, Sam tschui HB, Andrew brunello, center. All three are U16 kids and are all in the cowboys/broncs development pathways but none are contracted ATM . These are the types of kids we should be looking to embed in our club to not only develop them as players but to foster loyalty and long term service to the club IMO. All three stared in innisfails clean sweep of the NQ championships as posted on the nrl website by the QRL.

The problem with a lot of the Junior programs is that the club wants to win competitions and that is sometimes at the detriment of developing juniors.

A lot of clubs will pick a team that will win them a Harold Matt’s or Flegg competition and then dump some of the kids the following year. Hopefully we look at developing kids over a number of years with a view to developing future first graders.

We won’t be able to develop every player though, this has to be done in conjunction with talent scouts.

We need recruitment scouts out there , identifying some gem young players, need to look towards the future and build that for long term success!! We’ve done it before, so faith is it will/Is happening again.
