Hi all,
As there are a number of Sydney clubs in the NRL, my question to the forum members is, which clubs do you think are in danger of being extinct?
My favourites would be Manly, Wests Tigers & Cronulla.

Honestly, it’s Manly, Parra, Tigers and Bulldogs at the moment.

How about none? This is Australia. We don't cull teams because there are too many. We cull teams who aren't financially viable. Imagine how boring the NRL would be if we had one team in each city like they do with American football?

In fairness, the NFL has 50 states to work with in regards to picking teams.
I wouldn't be surprised if there a clubs in Sydney struggling financially looking at possible mergers/relocation in the near future.

I don't think that will happen considering the NRL has a billion dollar tv package. They'll look to expand in time not relocate.

In reality we are still very successful, look at the broncos , the cowboys, West Tigers etc . We have won more grand finals, and been in more grand finals in the past 10 years then most other teams, our fan base is big and our club has money. We will never merge, it’s a rough spot for us but we will come out of it, literally we had the worst roster last year Nd still avoided the spoon

I love the Bulldogs but I think if steps aren't taken we won't have a comp to watch in 20 years. Realistically, Sydney needs to be culled to 4 teams whether by having a 2 tier comp, voluntary move or merger: Norths, Souths, Easts and Wests, move/promote 2 teams in Redcliffe and Ipswich and create 1 team with the best outlook of Perth, Fiji, 2nd kiwi team, country NSW etc

We definitely have far too many teams in Sydney. And if you are talking long term viability of the clubs, I think it is at LEAST 3 clubs heavy.

If you're looking from a handout perspective, the Tigers, Dragons and Sharks are definitely up against it. Manly are in the conversation as well, given they've constantly been a financial mess.

Would not lose any sleep if any of those 4 are axed/relocated.

Would love to see the TigPies culled or relocated purely because it would give us a much larger nursery to operate in.

What makes you think it’s parra or us? I’d think these two clubs are safe. Tigers, manly, dragons and sharks are the ones In danger.

Dude do you know how much revenue the leagues club makes? We’re one of the richest sporting clubs in Australia at the moment - and that includes comparisons to AFL clubs.

I have heard the Sharks are in massive financial trouble again.

They are in massive debt and have been forced to sell off lots of their part of the development around Shark Park just get cash flow.

They were banking on that bringing in rent money for years and its all gone.

They only have a shorts sponsor for next year as well.

I wouldn't lose a minute of sleep if those pricks went under.

Love to see the Sharkies gone.
Closely followed by Manly who have had historical financial issues for the last 25 years.
I dont mind Parra been forced out, purely so we could absolve their area & brand new stadium...

What I'd like to see:

1. Three less Sydney teams
2. Another team in Queensland
3. A team in Perth
4. A team in Adelaide (This one would be very difficult)

- Tigers have the smallest fanbase in Western Sydney, financially unstable and unsuccessful so relocate them.
- Sharks are actually a difficult one, they have a really strong fan base and have had some on-field success recently, but I would cull them over Manly only because Manly have had a more stable history and less major controversies, but I think one or the other has to go.
- Merge Panthers and Eels. Eels bring a large fanbase and Panthers bring a good team with good juniors, Eels have been very unstable last few years and we have had way more success than the Panthers so we should beat them out to stay.

The problem then becomes trying to grow the teams in Perth and Adelaide, the NRL would have to help them out and somehow to get a marquee player there to build excitement and get the teams going good early on.

Agree generally, but I just dont see Adelaide being viable (and properly viable, not struggling like the Gold Coast). Its not a huge city and they are probably bigger Aussie Rules nuts than Victorians. '

A second team in Brisbane and/or Sunshine Coast is a must. Unfortunately it may too too late for them to ever really be seen as a viable alternative to the Gronks - the city's only major newspaper just happens to be the major shareholder of the Broncos and the media coverage is beyond saturation. At times, its hard to remember there are other teams in the comp. A new team would need some serious financial clout and be prepared to lost a lot of money for a while.

Parra are too strategic and we have too much money and too large a supporter base to lose.

Tigers Definitely.

Maybes would be Manly and Cronulla.
