Former NSW Origin halfback Trent Hodkinson today signed a new one-year contract to play with the Sharks in 2018.

Hodkinson, who played six games for NSW in 2014-2015, was released from his contract with the Newcastle Knights, opening the way for Sharks coach Shane Flanagan to make a quality addition to his current NRL squad.

“The opportunity to sign Trent materialised when it became obvious he was going to negotiate a release and his addition to our squad will add to our depth and experience in the halves,” Flanagan said.

He’s fully aware he’s coming here as a back-up, but these days you need a real competitive 30-man squad with four halves but no only that, he fits our club in that he is a quality person off the field, someone who can enhance our community programs, while his leadership and experience will help with the development of our young halves Kyle (Flanagan) and Jack Williams.”

“Plus Origin is sure to cause some challenges with (Val) Holmes, (Wade) Graham, (Andrew) Fifita. (Josh) Dugan and (Matt) Moylan all possibly missing, with our depth and experience crucial during that period of the season,” Flanagan added.

....

So there you have it... Hodkinson playing reserve grade this season!

Massoud claims $135,000 1 year deal... how the mighty have fallen.
Still getting the rest from Knights, or some have said got more last year to cover this year because they were so far under cap
So still pocketed big money

Makes the battle of the halves in round 12 of the ISP a cracker. Benji for the Wests magpies and Hodgo for Newtown.

This would be my starting 13 for the sharks. I dont think Townsend is a good game manager, move him the the left side and allow Graham to ease the pressure on him.
1. Moylon
2. Holmes
3. Gray
4. Dugan
5. Feki
6. Townsend
7. Hodkinson
8. Fifita
9. Brailey
10. Prior
11. Lewis
12. Graham
13. Gallen

At 130k where they really better off by releasing Hodkinson instead of Cogger?

Pretty much confirms Cogger won't be coming in 2018.
I think Newcastle's position is totally wrong.
While contractually they are right, holding the kid back from potentially starting 7 with is really poor.
There is NO upside for Jack staying at Newcastle.

Yep Newcastle are paying $465k or thereabouts of Hodkinson's contract for this season.
And you are cořrect, apparently Knights prepaid him.about $300k last season.

I wonder.
How much would Cogger be on at the Kights?
Obviously you think less than $135k.
Any idea what his new Canterbury contract is worth?

I really cant remember Hodko doing anything special at our club other than winning some tight games with kicking field goals

Can't really argue with ya. We made the GF without him in 2012 and would say 2014 was on the back of Ennis and our forward pack. However his game management and goal kicking was the best we had in ages.

he never was unless it was a very cheap first year, coz we dont have cap to accomodate fk all this time of year. No club should have cap space in February.

Why would you gamble on Moylan in the halves when he is a fullback?
Let Hokko play, might be good under Flanagan.

Not much, his defence front on was probably he's best asset
