SHORT DROPOUTS A NO-BRAINER
THERE’S one part of the Canterbury Bulldogs’ game that makes rugby league a better spectacle.

It’s the contest for the football from their short line dropouts.

When you think about it, every club should be doing it.

By taking a shorter kick, you’re probably a 25 per cent chance of getting the ball back.

If it doesn’t work, your opponents start their tackle count 15 or 20 metres out.

From the regular and longer line dropouts, the opposing team is usually back to the 20 metre line by the second tackle anyway. So it’s worth the risk.

Now that scrums are such a farce, any contest for possession makes the games more interesting.

Keep up the good work Superman.

But seriously, its worth having a go maybe once a game, but you wouldn't want to be doing it every time.

Needs a smart halfback/captain/drop out guy who can spot when their own team is set up for it and the opposition isn't.

The article is right in that for a regular drop out, the opposition are attacking your line within 1 or 2 tackles anyway...

Id like to see a Mix up or the short, the scud missile straight at the side line and the longer.
Same as the Kick off, mix it up more sideline attacking kicks, they are so hard to stop when done right.

it is good tactic but just dont fucken over do it , like we did it with last year by taking the tackle on the last instead of kicking it.

Taking a tackle on the last was never a tactic LOL it was just re-occurring brain fades and confusion between the halves and props.

no it was a tactic from des to prevent giving the 7 tackle set to opposition if the ball goes dead when kicked.

panthers used it for other reasons and did it to perfection against us in the semi final and tired our forwards out in no time.

True. We should make a pattern like every second goal line we do a short kick off. Make other coaches think they're Einstein thinking they've cracked the code, but realllyyyyyy it's just to fuck with their minds and will start taking long drop outs with most of the opposition up close and will have to sprint back or be called offside if they interfere with play. I dunno

Anyone see Blake Austin's whopper on the weekend? 65m on first bounce. Good luck getting that back in 1-2 tackles.

In fact, if you kick over 50m, they are unlikely to get back to 20 till tackle 4/5.

Drop out goes say 55m.
First tackle should be 45m.
Second tackle 35m
Third tackle 25m out.

Assuming defence is decent.

Yea but only a select few players could get the ball passed the 50m. And Mbye gets the ball to the 40m at best.

It all comes back to having unwavering confidence with on line defensive patterns.

It's a good tactic if the chase is there. No point in kicking short to the opposition only!!

Any dropout should be toward the sideline. It has the chance to bounce over and gain us a scrum feed; it locks them into only having one way to move the ball; and puts them under pressure to catch the thing and not let it run.
