With all the technology available they should be more creative with the show. Having the worlds most iconic landmark to play with means the job is already have done. They need to do more with it than just have fireworks.

Firstly, they can use more of the lighting that we have at hand for events such as vivid to draw some of the attention away from what the fireworks are doing. So having the beams around the bridge light up would be awesome as well as having projections on the side buildings.

Its NYE which is the only night for fireworks. Leave the lights show for vivid. You get a whole week for a lights show people don't wait for that one time of year to see stupid lights for one night.

Secondly, the fireworks need to be more than just up and explode, that need more of a design to change the way they move. Torpedos for instance they fly around crazy and don't explode.

They already use those. YOU just don't pay attention to them because lets face it YOU don't like them.

How about also using a few drones that have some fireworks on them - people will have no idea where they have been launched from, they'll just see them appearing in the sky.

Great idea, but have you used a drone? When you find one in the world capable of handling an explosion then suggest it.
Also fireworks need to be set from the ground up not from the sky down. That would be kind of scary tbh...when you come up with a logical way of it working then come back to me.

Then you have all the ones that can be synced with the music, so the lights and fireworks behave to the beat of the music.

Dude you really arent very attentive are you? What do you think they've been using since 2000? Maybe you have really bad rhythm? Seriously the things YOU think they're behind on i think YOURE behind on.

Finally, put something back on the bridge to end the show - ANYTHING. That was how the display always ended, with an image up there that everyone would look forward to seeing and wondering what it is. Now, there's nothing but the same waterfall every year which is old.

Um, buddy, they didn't do it this year because the bridge WAS the icon :expressionless:

And, just for a fresh change, stop freaking saying that they are already working on next NYE fireworks before the one for the current NYE has even taken place. That's probably why it's the same boring shit all the time.

Im pretty sure you're the only guy in Sydney who finds the fireworks boring. Sweety try actually celebrating nye and then it wont be so boring.

In conclusion, if they were paying you to do it love, we'd pretty much be watching the same thing that we're watching now. There is absolutely nothing new with your ideas hun.

No offence you know i love you and all and no it isn't the hormones, you've just failed to really explain why you don't like it. And i think its because in general you just don't like fireworks...
I didn't notice the syncing working. So I'm guessing that they have the really shit type of technology here. I thought maybe the music wasn't the type that would sync to the fireworks and hoped that a song would kicked in that would, but that didn't happen. It's as if they didnt' use them this year. I did notice them in previous years though.

Why is the bridge the icon? Why not something different that isn't 500 metres long like the bridge? Heck, have an icon of the bridge if that's the case. They did it with Uluru one year.

I don't find fireworks boring. This thread should serve as a lesson to how much I love fireworks. The point being, don't say something that simply won't happen Foti's - that being the fireworks display being shit rather than the best ever.

The 9pm fireworks were very underwhelming , lasted just 8 minutes .. Then it was like sydney rolled over and went to sleep.

@Mumma
1. Fireworks lasted 12 minutes.. that's 11 minutes and 58 seconds longer than me, so it's still a solid effort.
2. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just round up like .. I dunno .... 300?? homosexuals and have them beat off and jizz in sync off the Harbour Bridge? Damn site cheaper and it would be the epitomy of the fireworks (one giant worldwide wank).

Water lasers, lasers from rooftops, projections all over buildings, barges off the rooftops... we've seen stuff like that before and it's epic. In an era with 3d water projectors, they should be using stuff like that in conjunction with fireworks.

They need to take cues from how Vivid use the harbour, tweak with fireworks, and see how other things have also used the harbour.

We can do much better.
Don't they already do that at Mardi Gras?

To me fireworks are repetitive and unless there are types of fireworks that are yet to be discovered, unfortunately most people are still not going to like them.

Okay seriously, that's just an unessasary complaint. I don't know what fireworks you were watching but clearly they weren't the same. There was nothing wrong with it.

Why would the icon on the bridge be an icon of the bridge? That doesn't make any sense. The bridge is our icon and it represents our city so i cant figure out why an icon matters so much to you.

You're nit picking about things that people don't take notice of. People are usually too happy or drunk to notice the little things that really don't matter that are bothering you so much.
The issue here isn't the fireworks display, the issue is that its people like you who demand unrealistic things and even if they were to happen you still wouldn't be happy.
So as you would say, why fix it if it isn't broken? ;)

P.s: sorry if I've offended you but it had to be said...and yes im hormonal lol

Listen to me woman, you asked me for my 2 cents and I gave it. What I'm after at the end of the day is the "best fireworks display ever" as the Foti's put it - but you put it right when you said "To me fireworks are repetitive" - that's EXACTLY it. The fireworks are the same, repetitive. Why say that it's going to be bigger and better than the previous year when it's the same thing? If it's going to be the same, then say that so at least we know not to get our hopes up!

Mumma do you happen to know any of those people working on the display as you seen rather defensive of the company.

It was shit, not just shit, but fucking shit.

Smaller, much of the same effects, nothing new. To me it almost came across as someone handing over $1 million for fireworks and only getting $100k worth.

I've seen fireworks at parks and Darling Harbour that shit all over the NYE ones.

It was bland, it was unoriginal... frankly... it was boring.

The last fireworks display I attended on Sydney Harbor was from memory the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony. It was at 10:00pm from memory, and the following day was the labor day public holiday. That one wasn't organised by the fotis. That was unique and original.

Get this. They had an F1-11 fighter jet fly from Sydney Olympic Park to the harbor dumping fuel along the way in the Parramatta river which ignited the fireworks. It broke the sound barrier and then the fireworks started. That was spectacular. I loved that one. All they've been doing since is the same boring stuff. What they had on this past NYE would've been good if it was the first time, but the waterfall, the explosions, everything was the same. Don't mislead the audience by saying it's going to be the best one yet.

Listen to me you big JAHESH. Yep i said it. Fireworks in general are repetitive. I asked you to justify your complaint and how it can be better, AND STILL you're COMPLAINING!!!!! Jeez you're annoying! Its infuriating :rage:

@Mr Invisible you wanna know something? If it was you who created the thread I wouldn't be as defensive as I am being right now. The only reason I am is because a certain someone is really good at whining about something that is unessesary.

But for the record, we do have the best in the world. Find me a country that does a better display and I'll be quiet. And Dubai doesn't count!

You want a country that does it better? I'll give you a city. Times Square, New York. Not only do they have the ball dropping, but their fireworks are enhanced by the illumination of all the advertising billboards.

I think what everyone is trying to say, is that in the past we HAVE done much better (and added variety) yet for the past few years it seems like a massive cash grab from a fireworks company that got a contract and then ran out of ideas after the first year in contract. You can't say something will be "the best ever", year after year, and do the same thing.

For the past few years, it's been the Tony Williams of fireworks displays in Sydney.

This year they had the Red Bull Air Race pilot buzzing around the harbour, yet didn't include him in the fireworks. Why not have him blast under the bridge and set them off?

In the past we've had:
  • Lasers off building rooftops in the CBD/North Sydney.
  • Fireworks shot off those buildings (maybe insurance companies have got involved and said "nope can't do it off buildings", but still).
  • F18's buzz the harbour.
  • Naval ships used as barges (There was also a Navy celebration a while back (2016 iirc) which had an epic fireworks display).
  • Barges from the headlands all the way up to Parra. (This year nothing at all).
The harbour is like a blank canvas, yet we keep drawing the same artwork on it every year, and maybe some of us are getting a little too pissed off spending a large chunk of public money on a fireworks display, for the same thing.

I've seen the ones from Melb and Brisbane, and (Harbour Bridge as a launch aside), they killed Sydney this year. Sydney has the visuals of the harbour... but we need to take advantage of that.

I'd like to see them:
  • Use places like Cremorne Point, Bradleys Head, Blues Point, Balls Head, and areas like that to fire fireworks from barges into /over the harbour...
  • Have boats in the harbour with lasers/high powered lights on them beaming into the sky on them
  • A series of water pumps creating a large waterscreen with lasers projecting onto it (done in Darling Harbour before now).
  • Wire up all the headlands around the harbour with a string of lights/fireworks that come on at the end of the night, lining the harbour from headlands to Parra.
I mean, I'm no expert in that field, but if someone who has no idea about the industry can think of the above in 5 minutes, surely someone who a specialist in that field, can figure out something in 11 months time.

Okay ... found out that the International Naval Review was actually in 2013, and strangely also done by Foti.

So why can't they do something like this, add the bridge in for impact, and use the rooftops and laser lights, plus the Opera House to show (heck lets say all the good things that happened in Australia that year).

That'd be "the best ever".

Heck also add in massive flames shooting up 30-50m from the bridge pylons.

I mean .... how good would it be having our Navy, Air Force, and Army involved in bringing in the New Year.. heck knows they deserve it for keeping us all safe.

Maybe even have police cars with lights on placed around the harbours edge to give an effect.
That's the beauty of our harbor. We have awesome open air space unlike cities like NY and Hong Kong, yet they leave all that airspace empty. Shoot a few fighter jets or planes through, have the warships involved... FFS do SOMETHING!

Ok Foti's, last year (2016) you said the fireworks for tonight would be bigger than the 2017 fireworks... before the 2017 fireworks even started. So... let's see how shit this years ones turn out to be. Watch this space.

Wow... it's New Years Even and I'm on the kennel. How sad is my life :(

The Fotis = frauds

They are on a good wicket and who can blame them. Milking the government for all they got.

If you compare Sydney to other places around the world, we have one of the best displays. New York is so overrated and overhyped - sub zero temps, lame confetti and shit countdown. AUSTRALIA > USA.

Heaps better than last year. Sounds like they listened.

WTF was with ABCs coverage.. last firework goes off then bang... end of coverage.

No happy new year, no goodnight, no nothing.

BTW apparently the reason they only play 10 seconds of a song is too avoid paying royalties.
