THE Bulldogs have torpedoed a request from rookie five-eighth Moses Mbye to have a “Des Hasler clause” inserted in his new contract.
The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the Canterbury board voted unanimously to reject the request — for a get-out option if Hasler was replaced as coach — and to make a strong statement to the entire NRL.
Canterbury chief executive Raelene Castle confirmed the club’s hardline position, which is a major call considering rival clubs — including Melbourne Storm — are lining-up to try to poach Mbye from Belmore.
“Our philosophy at Canterbury-Bankstown is club first, team second and individual third,’’ she said.
“If we allow players to put coach clauses in contracts, then we’re failing to deliver on our core beliefs and values.”
A number of high-profile NRL players have had coach clauses inserted in recent contracts, notably Darius Boyd in relation to Wayne Bennett, and Kieran Foran with Brad Arthur at Parramatta.
But the Bulldogs believe such a move is dangerous, particularly if a number of players are allowed such a clause and then there is a change of coach.
Mbye has quickly become one of the most in-demand playmakers off-contract at the end of next season.
The club discussed tabling Mbye a four-year deal before verbally changing it to a two-year upgrade to coincide with Hasler’s current contract.
It’s believed the Bulldogs’ offer upgrades Mbye’s contract to in excess of $1.1 million over the next two seasons, with incentive bonuses if the rising star makes the Queensland or Australian Kangaroos teams.
It’s also believed Canterbury has been in discussions with Parramatta and NSW Origin winger William Hopoate about shifting to Belmore next season.
Hopoate is currently in a bitter contract row with the Eels, with Hopoate taking legal action against the club.
The Dogs are currently in talks about extending the contracts of winger Sam Perrett and centre Chase Stanley.
But troubled rookie Jacob Loko is expected to be cut loose after failing to break into the club’s NRL side in two seasons.
