LOL owned.

I hate the arguments about the stadium upgrades, when are we going to get the upgrades? can we use them before the wc? there's a lot that's still up in the air.

Oh he cares alright...and its the figures of 3.8 billion and 8.2 billion viewers that is worrying him.
Whats also worrying him is the fact that the World Cup that was held in Japan in 2002 has led to that country now having a very successful local competition in the J- league where the quality of play is good and the stadiums are almost full.

Same effect from the world Cup held in America in 1994. The MLS has remained a viable competition and many franchises have actually gone on to build their own stadiums which shows to me that they must be doing something right.

Demetriou is worried because he knows not only will the FFA cash up big time but the local comp will get a big boost.

I'll stand by Demetriou on this one.

The arrogance, belittling and sarcasm written by this journo highlight exactly what soccer and there governing bodies of soccer think of themselves. We're bigger than you, so this is what will happen. Well unless soccer comes up with some more realistic options and a whole lot less of a condiscending tone it won't happen. Especially when it comes across from the beginning that we'll tell you whats happening like it or lump it. That doesn't and never will work in Australia, whether it's sport, business or home life. History has shown that.

It won't cut it in Australia. We, Australians as a whole, don't give a rats about a sport full of cheats, bad actors, sooks. Junior player participation rates of soccer compared to other sports in Australia are well in front, but when it comes to viewing and attending senior level Afl and league are leaps and bounds in front. Diving, cheating and sooking just aren't tollerated by the Australian public.

Yeah, I'll watch the world cup, and I used to watch a lot of EPL and Serie A but that stopped because of the above said cheating, sooking and diving. The more I saw, the less I tolerated. But don't come to this great country thinking you are the be all and end all.

Well that is my opinion, now i'll sit back and wait to get the attacks from the soccer fans that believe the world cup must be allowed to do what it wants, when it wants, how it wants, whenever it wants.

the gAyFL for the last 113 years have always had things go their way. now something is not going their way and demitriou is acting like a brat by saying he wont be letting the FFA use the MCG and Etihad stadium for the world cup.

It won't cut it in Australia. We, Australians as a whole, don't give a rats about a sport full of cheats, bad actors, sooks. Now me as a League fan who also loves his FOOTBALL... sorry soccer. If you only think that 'soccer' is the only sport that has these cheats, bad actors and sooks then you obviously havent been watching too many rugby leagues game as of late. Remember our game against the dragqueens early this year? what did jamie soward exactly do in that game?

Well that is my opinion, now i'll sit back and wait to get the attacks from the soccer fans that believe the world cup must be allowed to do what it wants, when it wants, how it wants, whenever it wants.

No worries Ozman. Thankyou for not straight out attacking my views with the same type of vitriol that is often used when opinions differ in this forum.

Yes the AFL has had things go their way for a long time, but, I think this is due to unparalleled support throughout Victoria for Australian Football. They get their way due to the masses supporting their game. Which has a cause and effect on advertising, tv rites, sponsorship, ground rites, news coverage etc. I don't think Demetrio is acting like a spoilt brat, more so protecting the sport, fans, their history, and a business. The MCG was given permissive occupancy to the Melbourne Cricket Club in 1853, levelled in 1854 and had it's first 1st class cricket match played on in 1856, and AFL played their first game there in 1859. Winter sport and summer sport sharing ever since. It is hallowed ground for the AFL, players and fans. Not only that, are we now getting back into the territory of breaking contracts, AFL has a 25 year contract with Etihad stadium as principal lease holder. If it wasn't for the AFL Etihad wouldn't have been built. Someone needs to pay the bill.

With regards to the term soccer, well that is what it is called in nations where soccer is not the primary code of football. The term soccer was actually coined in the same country that wrote the original set of rules, in 1863, for how soccer is played today, England, and it comes from the term Association Football. A term still used by some clubs in their name e.g. Sunderland AFC. Others have, during the course of time, dropped the A. Soccer is a colloquial abreviation of Association Football coined in the 1880's at oxford and cambridge uni by students that liked to shorten words for ease or coolness. e.g. brekkers for breakfast and rugger for rugby football. The term Footer was once widely used as well. Predominately used in the public school, what we call private school, system at the time because they had more than one code of football.

And no soccer isn't the only sport I see with cheats but it has stood out immensly over the years in that one particular sport as acceptable. And what did the fans do with regards to Jamie Soward, yet hardly a word about Thierry Henre. What about Rivaldo at the 2002 world cup.

Just my opinion regarding the points you brought up Ozman.

Well we other Australians also dont tolerate players who glass their girlfriends and wives. Players who belittle women by intimidating them into having a group sex , players who rape women and then say I dont remember anything I was drunk, players who assault people because they are either stoned or drunk, players who take dumps in a public places because they are animals , players who are so arrogant they get shot at in the Cross, players who damage public property and use alcohol as their excuse.
All these examples are from the past 12 months only . I can go back a few years when gouging, biting, head highs , sticking fingers up players asses were the norm but I think ive made my point..
So all your blah blah blah blah dont come to our country because we Australians dont tolerate cheats is farcical and makes you very transparent.

It seems to me the rednecks who govern the other sports in this country and the rednecks in general are running scared. They are running scared because the sleeping giant who just so happens to be the king of sports has slightly awoken in this country on the back of the national teams success in recent years. And some rednecks are running scared that if the local competition grows in support their stranglehold will be eroded. Some codes are already barely hanging on, tahts why they are asking for soccer handouts, amounts in compensation that they would not even make ina decade..

Whether Demetriou the puppeteer ( puppetter of the AFL rednecks) or all rednecks in general like or not the world cup will be coming to Autralia most likely in 2022. Those who believe all codes can co-exist in this sport loving country will embrace this sporting event and most will benefit from world cup...except the AFL. For years now the AFL have implemented a policy that is against all codes co-existing in this country. Im happy that Lowy and the FFA are fighting them head on because they seem to think that its their god given right to be the only recognised national code in this country.

And the FFA have not been arrogant, its the federal and state governments who want the World cup just as much because of the economical windfall.

The FFA have made a business decision to leave the AFL out in the cold and good on them. For years now Soccer has been sabotaged in this country.

And as for the journo who wrote the article...good on him ,maybe he remembers the redneck journos who worked for the Daily Mirror in the 1980's who would write articles that a soccer match in the NSL ( Olympic - APIA) one weekend attracted more fans than at league games in an insinuating manner that some sacrilege had been committed.
The same journos who 1 week later would write about the ethnic game of "wogball" with the flares and the foreign flags being so unaustralian and having no place in australian sport. And all this in the same year that Les Boyd was breaking Brohmans jaw was very Australian???....hypoctites.

The wheel has spun, soccer is here to stay and be part of this country sporting culture. Those who fight it will do so at their own peril.
The World cup will have positive spin offs for League and other sporting codes.
Accept it.

The vitriol I expected sooner or later, came from no less than the one and only Gate7. I could bother retaliating to the immature blah blah blah statement and the redneck, puppeteer ones as well, and maybe the whole statement. But i'm not going to bother waisting my time on you. I'd rather sit back and laugh at how worked up you got because of your own simple one eyed negativities and bigotry. Why do you even bother watching rugby league if these are your attitudes.

The wheels have spun, oops sorry, looks like you've got your wheels stuck on the dyno revving the **** out of your Datsun stanza. Yup, I can make personal attacks too. I would have preferred a debate about the issue though.

Enjoy your day bud, or should I just say blah blah blah

When you come out attacking a sport you should be big enough to accept the flip side.
Unlike you, I support nad follow many sports and believe that all codes can co -exist in this country.
Soccer and league happen to be 2 of them .
But your bull**** australiana rhetoric in bagging out the game of soccer is the same crap rednecks were using for years to keep soccer down in this country. I can see straight through it....yes we know, soccer is unaustralian...pffft.
Im sorry if the truth hurt you but what I posted were facts. I find it farcical that you would think that "we" Australians wont tolerate diving , cheating etc etc and yet will turn a blind eye to all that I have posted.

Whats a debate for you?....one where your thoughts are passed as gospel ?

And its not a datsun stanza.....its a Valiant...the choice of all wogball loving australians of the time.

I dont recall calling you a redneck, but for some reason you have bitten and feel I have madea personal attack.......

Continuing to go of half cocked. Can you read and understand what your reading? None of the tripe you sprout hurts and I don't and won't have a, what you call, debate with you. I will have a debate though, just not the undisciplined, obnoxious, tanty style slanging match that you seem to want. Take a breath, calm down and have a good think about it. You don't know me, so your broad sweeping statements you seem to want to make about me just make me laugh.
Your on fire bud, what's next?

well that itailian diving 50 seconds before time against us in last years WC with one man redcarded would have been the best example i would use for cheating.

Was this a greater conspiracy when the Italians needed such a shot in arm with Italian football being so openly embarressed by the Serie A club match fixing allegations.

And who suffered, Australia. But did we really. Australians love their sport extremely passionately and i never saw so much togetherness during the last WC in all the clubs and pubs all over sydney. No one cared where your parents were born and what supposed race you were. During that WC all were AUSTRALIANS and proud. except the Italian/Australian on Norton street..

AFL and RL really just self promote state rivalry and this will never change. FOOTBALL or soccer will UNITE a country in passion. Who went to the Australia / Uruguay qualification final?? I have never seen a crowd in Australia where 99.8% of Australians supported the same team or sang our nation anthem with so much passion.

Bring the WC to Australia and in the only real world sport we will be united in Victory as the greatest sporting nation in the world.

Other codes can go back to century old biccarring once the real Soccer circus leaves town, perhaps away for another 100 years.
