We all know Jim. Or we've at least seen his cartoon mug on some sort of vehicle driving around town. You know the guy...

This blokes group was established 28 years ago. How on earth is it that within a relatively short time, a guy can move from simply supplying general handyman services to everything else humanity has to offer?

Hahah. BBQ Cleaning. Why would you need to hire someone to clean your BBQ?

That's just unAustralian.

Do you mean:-

  • You should know how to clean your bbq yourself
  • You leave the grease on so it tastes better next time

I used their plumbing service once purely because they I didn't know anyone else in Brisbane at the time (and was a bit lazy to do research).

They are good for lazy people, but I would generally not use them (I also have a good plumber if anyone needs one in Brisbane). Too expensive (gotta pay those franchise/referral costs).

I see a distinct lack of:
Jims Fisting
Jims Rims (you know what I'm talkin BOUT!)
Jims Fingerbanging
Jims Escort Service

I have used Jims before (Antennas/Cabling), I also know people who own a franchise (won't say what), and I've also investigated their franchises before.

In short:
Guy I used for cabling = really good and professional, and did it at a really good price.
People who own a franchise = on the fence if they'll continue with it, as it's highly regimented and you have to buy everything yourself.
My own investigations years ago = Return on investment is really poor and you get shoehorned into only being able to operate in certain areas/regions, with little benefit of being a franchisee. The only way to make really decent money would be to own several franchises and block out an entire area (e.g entire North West Sydney).

Like all franchises though, the franchise owners aren't the ones getting rich, it's the ones selling the franchises that do.

Jim's Rimjobs ay... I wonder if he'll go there.

Truly what I've heard about Jim though is that he's apparently a pretty big tightarse and is someone hard to deal with. He's money-hungry.

In my experience as a Liquidator, I can say that overall, Franchises are not what they are cracked up to me. They are a long way from a licence to print money. I recently wound up a Subway. When I looked at how much they paid for the franchise in the first place (>$300K), they could have just kitted out an awesome sandwich shop and spent a truckload on promotion and still been ahead.

I have a friend who owns 4 salsa franchises. She works her ringer off, and is quite good with money, and its now paying off, so there are definitely opportunities.

But you are at the mercy of the franchisor. Take Dominoes - they want you to sell pizzas for $5? You have to sell pizzas for $5. Franchisee fees are around 12 - 15% of turnover, so you need solid profit margins just to cover these fees.

A lot of Indians are buying them for visa requirements, similar to how Chinese are buying properties.

YOu would doubt Jim Penman is short of a quid. I think its like the world's franchise system of its kind.

..... Dad?
For those of us old enough to remember:

"Dear Penthouse,

I never thought these stories were real, until last week the following story happened to me.

I'm just an average guy who mows lawns for a living, but I still pull my share of pussy.

Anyway, I had a job last week..... " (you get the idea).
