That was a rail Pay Bus.

Before direct deposit for wages, employees were paid in cash. These vehicles travelled the system carrying the pay packets for railway employees.
They had an armed guard to secure the cash.

There were different variants of the design. Most were glorified buses with a secure spot for carrying the cash. Some couldn't run in reverse.

One was blown up at Yerrinbool, killing the crews, and scattering money all over the place. The thieves used too much dynamite (like the scene from Butch Cassidy).

Apart from that incident, they always delivered the money safely to their destinations.

Non air braked coal hoppers. The loco had the only air brakes for the whole train. Brakes could be manually applied by the brake van, or by walking back along the trains to apply them by hand on each or selected wagons. Very time consuming.

The hoppers have lugs on their tops. They were not attached to their frames - just sat on top. They were picked up off their frames by cranes and swung over ships to discharge the coal directly into the hold.

The wagons belong to private operators. They were hauled by the mines' locomotives to Maitland or Hexham, where NSWGR locos took over.
