The first of the "Sputnik" cars, with automatic doors. These came in when Circular Quay station opened.

Target plates on the front of suburban trains had initials for the depot they were allocated to.
M=Mortdale,
H=Hornsby,
F=Flemington,
B=Punchbowl (Bankstown).
S=Sydney, but there was no Sydney depot.
U was for the interurban fleet which was based at Flemington.

Ashfield Railway Station - circa 1879
In the days when platforms were staggered. The photo is taken off the end of platform 2. The platform ends were connected by a footbridge. Platform 1 was always on the line for trains going to Sydney, and usually had the only waiting room. It was assumed that people coming from Sydney wouldn't need to wait for trains as they would be getting off to go home.
